Our project for Powerhouse Arts, Inc. has been awarded the Swiss Arc Award in the Education & Health category. For the past 12 years, the awards program has recognized the best buildings in Switzerland and those designed by Swiss practices around the world. Sited in Gowanus, Brooklyn, Powerhouse Arts involved the restoration and adaptive reuse of the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Power Station, originally built in 1903. The 170,000-square-foot facility — accommodating workshops for wood, metal, ceramics, textiles, and print fabrication — transformed a derelict structure on a contaminated site into a vibrant center for artists, fabricators, and makers. This year’s jury included Dominique Salathé, Manuel Herz, Ludovica Molo, and Roger Boltshauser. The ceremony took place in Baden, where Ascan Mergenthaler received the prize on behalf of the project team. More info on Powerhouse Arts here: https://lnkd.in/errTASaQ

The discussion will center around this project as well as the Fifth Avenue Hotel designed by PBDW Architects and Perkins Eastman, and will be moderated by Josephine Minutillo, of Architectural Record. PBDW Founding Partner and Stanford White’s great-grandson, Samuel White, FAIA described his recent project to restore the historic dining room in Stanford White’s house. In reference to its furnishings, he states, “the joke in the family is that they consisted of whatever he couldn’t sell to clients. It was a real mixed bag of 19th-century reproductions.” Many more interesting tidbits in the recent Architects Artisans article, “Restoring the Dining Room at Stanford’s White’s Country Home. The PBDW-restored Astor Courts was recently featured in Architectural Digest. We worked on the renovation for over 15 years with two separate owners. Our first renovation got a Preservation Award from the Preservation League of New York State and was the setting for Chelsea Clinton’s wedding in 2010. Recent scope includes the restoration of the 1902 dumbwaiter, which allowed for a catering kitchen in the lower level.
