By strengthening health systems holistically—from working with community health workers who have trusted relationships with mothers in their communities to doctors and nurses at hospitals where mothers often deliver babies and receive emergency care—Pathfinder ensures mothers have safe pregnancies and deliveries, and can nurture healthy babies. In Niger, through our IMPACT2 project funded by the Netherlands Embassy in Niger, we are working with the Ministry of Public Health to strengthen the full spectrum of services offered to pregnant women and new mothers. Recently, IMPACT2 trained 114 health providers from 34 health centers in the Maradi region on postpartum family planning, and maternal, neonatal and child health and nutrition services. Health providers can now communicate a plan for care to each woman that lasts throughout her pregnancy and the first six weeks of her newborn's life. The project is also improving systems for data collection in health centers and maternity wards, and will organize a related training for 950 community-based caregivers, including community health workers in health huts.
