#ClimateChange poses a multifaceted threat to health and well-being everywhere, particularly in low- and middle-income countries with limited resources and less resilient infrastructures. With a population of approximately 3.6 billion, climate-vulnerable regions face increasing and worsening weather events—devastating storm systems, floods, wildfires, and heat waves—resulting in a death rate 15 times higher than in less vulnerable regions. At PATH, preparing the world’s health systems for the impacts of climate change is key to achieving universal health coverage. Our partner-oriented approach centers locally led solutions, data-informed decision-making, innovative technologies, and resilient health systems. Investing in Global Health Should be at the Heart of the UK’s International Development Agenda As the Chief Scientific Officer at PATH, I'm urging the new UK government to prioritize global health in its international development agenda. The global progress on health in recent decades is at risk due to debt crises, conflict and COVID. The impending threat posed by emerging infectious diseases, and the climate impacts on health, underline the need for innovation and investment in health research and development and using our convening power diplomatically to build respectful partnerships. Now is the time for Keir Starmer and David Lammy to ensure the UK plays its part in shifting gears to build a healthier world for all. 1. Despite slow economic growth, only a wise investment in global health financing can drive real change. Restoring the 0.7% GNI commitment to Overseas Development Assistance isn't just a goal; it’s a lifeline for millions. In the last years, we've seen how the ODA cuts have adversely impacted progress on polio, neglected tropical diseases and global sexual and reproductive health programs. Cuts also reduce our ability to make use of world-leading partnerships required to address the next pandemic. 2. The climate emergency significantly strains affected countries’ health systems. In budgeting for international development, the new government must avoid the false dichotomy of choosing between climate and health priorities. Instead, it should prioritize smarter investments in climate-resilient health systems, recognizing their interconnectedness. This approach enables structural interventions to mitigate emerging diseases and the impacts of climate shocks. 3. The COVID-19 pandemic amplified the disparities of access in global health. The UK must champion global health equity through its multilateral investments and engagements, which can be translated into continued investment in proven multilateral mechanisms like Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and the Global Fund that have saved millions of lives and proved essential for delivering impact at scale. To help the new FCDO leadership deliver on its approach to respectful partnership with the Global South, it is important to prioritize local decision-making to ensure that communities are empowered to make informed choices that best suit their unique health needs and contexts. By leveraging its role in the #G20, the UK can also promote local manufacturing and technology transfer frameworks to help achieve regional self-sufficiency. 4. AI can revolutionize healthcare delivery, but we need careful regulation to ensure its equitable and ethical use. The UK is well positioned to spearhead the global movement for the regulation of AI in health. To achieve this, a solidarity approach is most favorable, making regulatory science a digital public good. This solidarity can drive a digital health revolution in low and middle-income countries.

In 2022, more than 300 million people were living with chronic hepatitis B and C, viral infections that can cause acute and chronic disease and death. Yet many hepatitis infections—and deaths—can be prevented by ensuring all pregnant women living with chronic #HepatitisB have access to treatment and that their infants have access to hepatitis B birth vaccines to prevent infection. In Ghana's Bono East Region, the Ghana Health Service and PATH are expanding infectious disease screening and treatment among pregnant women during antenatal visits. This includes testing for conditions like hepatitis B, urinary tract infections, group B streptococcus, and sexually transmitted infections. Today, is #WorldHepatitisDay! July also marks the end of a two-year study to assess the accessibility and usability of #HepC self-testing in India. Part of the Unitaid-funded, Population Services International-led STAR III initiative, this study culminated in insights critical for India’s journey to end hepatitis C in the country by 2030. To commemorate the end of the study, our team in India and JDot Productions put together two short films featuring perspectives from the study team at PATH, SAATHII, and SHALOM and stakeholders, including community advisory board members, from Mizoram and Uttar Pradesh. Mothers who are infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV), HIV, or syphilis can pass these viruses to their babies during pregnancy, childbirth, or while breastfeeding. Each year, more than 180,000 newborn babies in the Asia-Pacific region are infected with HBV, 13,000 with syphilis, and 1,400 with HIV through mother-to-child transmission. #ItsTimeforAction In Vietnam, screening pregnant women for these diseases is not a standard component of MNCH or antenatal care services. To support the country's #TripleElimination goals, PATH teamed up with The Hepatitis Fund, Ville de Genève, and private-sector partners in 2022 to demonstrate a scalable and cost-effective model for preventing mother-to-child transmission in Nghe An Province. On July 16, the Nghe An Department of Health and PATH held a dissemination workshop, where we shared results and implemented an action plan to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV, HBV, and syphilis in Nghe An by 2030. “One Health is not just a theory; if we don’t get it right, the risk of new epidemics and pandemics will multiply. The stakes are very high for us, but even higher for those who are the most vulnerable.” In his opening remarks at an event convened in partnership with The Commonwealth, PATH President and CEO Nikolaj Gilbert stressed the importance of the #OneHealth approach for advancing action that mitigates the impacts of climate change on health. The event—“One Health approach: moving from siloed thinking to smart and systemic action”—brought together global leaders, policymakers, and experts to confront the critical intersection of human, animal, and environmental health amid the climate crisis. 🌏 Climate change is now a factor in every aspect of public health, and countries with the weakest health infrastructure are the most at risk. To achieve our goal of universal health coverage, we’ll need climate-resilient health systems, effective disease surveillance, and collaboration across sectors. The World Health Organization estimates that 58 million people are living with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV). HCV disproportionately affects people who inject drugs and people in prison, who are often highly marginalized and vulnerable. Globally, 39% of people who inject drugs and 26% of people in prison have an active HCV infection. #ItsTimeforAction Prevention, testing, and treatment products for HCV are highly effective, but most people in low- and middle-income countries can't access them. With support from Unitaid, and in partnership with Population Services International, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London, University of Bristol, The Hepatitis Fund, and Medicines Patent Pool, we're working alongside country stakeholders to address these barriers. Through the HCV Combination Prevention in PWID and Prisoners Project (HEPC3P), we aim to accelerate uptake of HCV prevention and treatment services among these high-risk groups in India, Nigeria, South Africa, Ukraine, and Vietnam. 🌍 PATH, with support from Unitaid and in collaboration with Population Services International, concludes the National Dissemination Event for the STAR III Hepatitis C #SelfTesting project! This week's event was filled with insightful discussions and meaningful recommendations from our panelists and speakers. Key takeaways: ☑ High acceptability and usability of hepatitis C virus (HCV) self-test kits among people who inject drugs and at-risk populations in both Mizoram and Uttar Pradesh. ☑ Emphasis on increasing awareness about hepatitis C, with a significant portion of the population currently unaware of the disease. ☑ Enhanced self-risk perception for HCV infection through personalized counseling and mass awareness programs. ☑ Availability of both blood-based and saliva-based self-test kits to meet participant preferences. ☑ Saliva-based kits show promise for unassisted use, emphasizing the need for their availability and approval by relevant authorities. ☑ Inclusion of information on ancillary services like counseling and confirmatory testing in the self-test kits to address participants' concerns about testing and disclosure. Thank you to our partners for their continuous support. Together, we are making concerted efforts towards eliminating #HepatitisC by 2030. 💪 #ItsTimeforAction #WorldHepatitisDay SAATHII The World Hepatitis Alliance asha hegde Saravanamurthy P.
