PATH has been highlighted in Stephanie Nolen's article for The New York Times, which outlines the challenging development process of the world’s first malaria vaccine, RTS,S. This groundbreaking vaccine is the culmination of over two decades of dedicated research, rigorous testing, and partnership with organizations like GSK, the World Health Organization, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. We remain unwavering in our commitment to saving lives through the RTS,S malaria vaccine. In pilot implementations across Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi, we've documented a 13% reduction in all-cause mortality among vaccinated children, alongside a significant decrease in severe malaria hospitalizations. As of last November, Cameroon has taken a pivotal step as the first non-pilot country to receive the vaccine, marking a significant advancement towards broader accessibility. https://lnkd.in/dZQ2tcNB #EndMalaria #ImmunizationEquity #HealthForAll

This article focuses on some of the challenges we face in maximizing impact for innovative new vaccines that don't benefit from a dual income market, but are urgently needed for deployment in low resource settings, in high volumes, and at low cost. Stephanie Nolen from the NYT interviewed more than 30 scientists, health officials and other key players in the development of the malaria vaccines to report this article. https://lnkd.in/gx_CX4t7

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that predominantly affects low and middle-income countries, with India bearing the third-highest global burden. In central India, approximately 1 in 86 births are affected by SCD, with around 20% of these children dying before their second birthday. PATH, in collaboration with the public health department of Maharashtra, is providing technical assistance to accelerate the rollout of the National Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Mission (NSCAEM). The mission aims to enhance the availability, accessibility, and quality of SCD-related health services by: • Integrating sickle cell disease management in primary health care and establishing a continuum of care for complex conditions • Strengthening supply chains to ensure point-of-care test kits and medications are available at all facilities • Leveraging community platforms to raise awareness and counter stigma associated with SCD Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eSWf6z_7 Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India | National Health Mission, Maharashtra | #SickleCellDisease

📣 Hot off the press! #Climatechange poses a complex, multifaceted threat to #health and well-being everywhere, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. With a population of approximately 3.6 billion, climate-vulnerable regions face increasing and worsening weather events—devastating storm systems, floods, wildfires, and heat waves—resulting in a death rate 15x higher than in less vulnerable regions. Over a third (37 percent) of heat-related deaths, and deaths caused by #undernutrition, #pollution, #Ebola, #antimicrobialresistance (#AMR), and #diarrheal #disease, are attributed to climate change. For every 1°C rise in global temperatures, the risk of #maternalmortality and morbidity goes up by 7.7 percent. PATH applies a comprehensive, partner-oriented approach toward advancing action that mitigates the effects of climate change and builds resilient #healthsystems for a healthier, more sustainable future in three key areas: climate-informed decision-making, sustainable solutions, and resilient health systems.
