Last month, PATH and the Association of People with Disabilities of Mozambique (ADEMO) co-hosted a roundtable on community-based rehabilitation of children under 5 with developmental delays and disabilities. More than 20 participants—including disability partners, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Action—took part in the meeting in Maputo. The ministries presented the current data on children with developmental delays and disabilities in #Mozambique and described their respective policies and plans to follow up and support these children with the services they need. In turn, ADEMO provided an overview of their model for community-based rehabilitation for the youngest children, gradually built up over the last five years with technical support from PATH, and shared lessons learned from adapting the evidence-based parenting support program, Ubuntu, to rural communities in northern Mozambique. The discussions brought to light the need for closer collaboration between the two ministries to support children with disabilities and ensure that assistive devices and social services are available to families, especially those referred for treatment away from home. Dr. Marina Karagianis, from the Nutrition Department at the Mozambique Ministry of Health, suggested that ADEMO’s experience could be applied by both ministries to expand community-based rehabilitation of young children to other provinces. #EarlyChildhoodDevelopment #CommunityBasedRehabilitation #ECR #DisabilityAwareness

For immunization decision-makers in low- and middle-income countries, the opportunity to introduce or switch to a new vaccine comes with many considerations. Is the vaccine needed? 50 government, donor, and partner representatives gathered in Maputo last week to celebrate over a decade of early childhood development (ECD) programming in #Mozambique, supported by PATH with funding from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. The participants visited “PATH Lab” to learn how counseling on #ECD and #MaternalMentalHealth is done in antenatal care and maternity wards. They also immersed themselves in an Ubuntu session for parents of children with disabilities, simulated by local partner ADEMO. Wilza Fumo, head of the Mental Health Department and representing the Ministry of Health’s National Public Health Director, stressed the importance of such interventions, taking into account Mozambique’s recent Demographic Health Survey showing that over 60% of children aged 2–5 years were not on track in their development. Nampula Provincial Health Services Director Dr. Munira Abudou described how PATH support has moved health system indicators in the target district, and how this has motivated the province to advocate for province-wide expansion of ECD interventions. “There are now ECD focal points in every district,” Dr. Munira said. The highlight of the event was a song performed by the Mozambican singer Yolanda of Banda Kakana: “Childhood is beautiful when lived well, and it is up to us to ensure that our children have good memories of growing up.”

Medical oxygen is vital for routine health care—whether it's in surgeries, emergencies, or maternal care—making consistent access a lifesaving necessity. In an article featured in Hindustan Times, PATH's Jayendra Kasar and Ankur Mutreja emphasize the need for sustainable, long-term strategies, particularly in the #GlobalSouth, to overcome infrastructure and logistical challenges. Investing in oxygen infrastructure and equipping health care workers with the necessary training will ensure that medical oxygen remains readily available, both for routine care and in future health emergencies. At #UNGA79, South Africa's Deputy Minister Deputy Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Steve Letsike joined a dynamic roundtable co-hosted by PATH, Digital Square at PATH, Wellcome Trust, World Health Organization, and Co-Develop. She highlighted South Africa’s drive to use digital public infrastructure for health (DPI-H) to transform health care, tackle climate challenges, and boost financial inclusion. South Africa is leading the way with decades of work in digital transformation, moving from paper-based health systems to integrated, secure digital platforms.
