Partners In Health (PIH) denounces the acts of violence and harm inflicted upon Haitian people and urges everyone to avoid racist tropes and explanations. PIH is a social justice organization that responds to the moral imperative to provide high-quality health care globally, starting with those who need it most. We refuse to accept that any life is worth less than another, which is one of many reasons why the PIH community has been infuriated by the false claims in the U.S. media that demean and instill fear among Haitians and Haitian Americans. In the United States, September kicks off #HispanicHeritageMonth, a national observance celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic, Latin American, and Afro-Latino communities, running from September 15 to October 15. Although the annual celebration is confined to these dates, PIH-US acknowledges that elevating the voices, stories, and histories of these communities is crucial year-round. Today, and every day, we honor the work of Hispanic, Latin American, and Afro-Latino individuals in shaping a future where everyone can thrive. Below, we highlight the incredible contributions and achievements of some of our community partners in Florida, Massachusetts, and North Carolina, check it out! Promise Douglas, a 9-year-old boy, and Vitalina Chaona, a 49-year-old woman, from Malawi endured years of pain due to severe heart conditions. Douglas, suffering a congenital heart defect, and Chaona, battling rheumatic heart disease, received inadequate treatment for their conditions until Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo (APZU), as we're known in Malawi, stepped in. Although APZU provided medications to manage their symptoms, surgery was crucial for a full recovery. With no surgical options available in Malawi, the APZU team accompanied both patients as they traveled to Tanzania for lifesaving heart procedures.
