"That such a storm has developed so early in the season shows that we are facing a climate emergency and must act now." Last week, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced a support package for the Caribbean in the wake of Hurricane Beryl. The UK Government’s response to the humanitarian need in the Caribbean is supported by HSOT – the Humanitarian and Stabilisation Operations Team, funded by the UK and managed by Palladium. Emergency shelter kits to support up to 4,000 people have been dispatched to Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines. These, along with 1,620 buckets for households to collect and store water, have been sent from supplies pre-positioned in the region as part of the UK's preparedness plans. Increasingly, nonprofits are embracing a 'social entrepreneurship' model as a way to continue operating even when external funding decreases. "Transitioning to financial sustainability is both a challenge and an opportunity to pave the way for their long-term impact and success," writes Palladium's Cindi Cisek. Our USAID-funded NPI EXPAND project recently published a study to learn from social enterprises about their experiences and how they're finding financial stability. "We know there is palpable environmental risk to operating this way indefinitely, but we also know AI can be a powerful new tool for sustainability," writes IBM Chief Sustainability Officer and Palladium Alum Christina Shim in a new article published by the Harvard Business Review last week. Christina believes AI can accelerate how quickly we solve problems (including the climate crisis), and shares practical advice for companies to use AI effectively while minimising the environmental impact "to the best of our collective ability." Conflict affects entire populations, but the impacts can be felt disproportionately by vulnerable groups like youth and women. In fragile contexts, sudden shocks in the labour market can leave those groups with fewer job opportunities overall. Sudan, which is facing a second year of conflict, is one of those fragile contexts. In an episode of the Challenge Fund for Youth Employment's podcast, speakers Ahmed M. Darwish, CFYE Country Lead for Sudan, Safiya Elfadni from Alsalam Factory, and Jonathan Moss, Palladium Director of conflict and stabilisation, discuss the significance of development programs in fragile contexts like Sudan and how they can be designed for long-term sustainability. As the toll of Hurricane Beryl's destruction mounts, Palladium’s Florian Kemmerich is thinking not only of his friends and family in Mexico, but about the millions of others whose lives will be upended this week – and in the years to come. “Witnessing how climate related disasters affect the livelihoods of millions globally,” he says, “we need to urgently innovate on the protection and resilience of these at-risk communities.” According to Florian, nature itself can help. Coastal ecosystems can protect critical infrastructure from natural disasters like Beryl, and the key is in restoring, investing in, and integrating our communities with these ecosystems. For children living in the midst of conflict, play with friends and peers can be a luxury. In the Southern Philippines, a region recovering from 50 years of conflict, the "Education Pathways to Peace in Mindanao" program is proving that play isn't just critical for children's wellbeing – it's necessary for their learning.
