Honoring Native Americans on September 27, 2024. "The history of Native American Day is intertwined with the broader efforts to recognize and honor the indigenous peoples of the Americas. The origins of this observance can be traced back to the early 20th century when Native American activists and advocates began pushing for the acknowledgment of their cultures, histories, and contributions within the United States. In 1992, the state of California officially declared the fourth Friday of September as Native American Day, setting a precedent for the date of the observance. This choice of timing holds historical significance as it often falls near the equinox, symbolizing a connection to nature and the changing seasons, which are integral to many Indigenous cultures."
