Research consistently demonstrates the potential of high-impact #tutoring to support students’ academic and social-emotional skills. But as districts spend their final federal COVID-19 emergency funds, they must now determine the best way to sustain tutoring programs going forward. There are many challenges with scaling high-impact tutoring—the substantial cost per student, the need to deploy a high-quality tutoring workforce, and the ability to effectively allocate resources to the students most in need of support. Overdeck Family Foundation was founded in 2011 by John and Laura Overdeck with the goal of providing all children the opportunity to unlock their potential. We focus exclusively on enhancing education, funding efforts both inside and outside of school in the areas of early childhood, hands-on STEM education, and K-9 programs that include supporting educators and student-centered learning environments. Here on LinkedIn, we continue to spotlight our dedicated team members who work behind the scenes to source, fund, and support organizations and researchers across the education sector. Today, meet Pete Lavorini, who leads the Foundation’s Innovative Schools portfolio, which aims to expand access to tech-enabled, student-centered K-9 learning environments, intentionally designed for all students to thrive. As a former sixth-grade teacher, Pete’s passion for this work is fueled by the promise and imperative of improving teaching and learning. "In my classroom, teaching one sixth grader how to add fractions was challenging. Teaching a whole classroom was even harder. And teaching all sixth graders feels nearly impossible—but I believe it's important and achievable. I do this work to support those who are dedicated to making it possible.” Before joining our team, Pete supported strategies to scale impact at OneGoal, a national college access and success nonprofit. He also has experience leading district-level initiatives for both New York City Public Schools and Pittsburgh Public Schools, and helping social impact organizations set and operationalize strategy during his time at The Bridgespan Group.

Our grantee TalkingPoints teamed up with Google to conduct an AI-powered analysis of 40 million messages in its platform to understand how administrators, teachers, and parents are exchanging information. The analysis found that 44 percent of the messages were focused on logistics, while only eight percent were about academics and five percent were about homework—indicating a valuable opportunity to improve parent-teacher communication. “We know that research shows that there needs to be more conversations about student learning, behaviors, engagement,” said Heejae Lim, founder and CEO of TalkingPoints. “All the other higher-quality conversation topics that we think should happen comes back to: there might be a lot of quantity [of] the conversations. But are they quality conversations? Not necessarily.”

Overdeck Family Foundation is proud to announce a grant of $900,000 to RPPL (Research Partnership for Professional Learning) to manage three studies focused on identifying the features and traits of genAI tools that show potential to improve teacher quality and student learning, and disseminate those results to the education community at large.
