What exactly is a heat island and how is it an environmental justice crisis? 🌇 Heat islands are specific areas, typically in urban environments, that experience much higher temperatures of heat than surrounding areas. 🌲 Studies have shown that wealthier communities are often cooler than lower income communities. 💥 Communities of color, low income communities, people who work outdoors, older adults, and people with chronic conditions and disabilities, are all disproportionately impacted by the effects of heat islands.
