Transforming Lives, Communities, and the Criminal Justice System

About us

Osborne is committed to transforming lives, communities, and the criminal justice system through: - Direct services and programs in five community sites—in the Bronx (our headquarters), Brooklyn, Buffalo, Manhattan, and Newburgh—and more than 30 prisons and jails, designed and proven to transform individuals, families, and communities. - Policy advocacy, training, technical assistance, and testing new approaches through the Osborne Center for Justice Across Generations (OCJAG), and our coalitions and partnerships, designed to transform the criminal justice system. In 2019, we adopted the following core values, which were composed through a collaborative process involving staff at all levels of the organization: 1. We honor everyone’s capacity to change. 2. We celebrate our shared humanity. 3. We are united in our pursuit of justice and equity. 4. We keep our word. 5. We are unstoppable.

Allison Hollihan, Director | NY Initiative for Children of Incarcerated Parents quoted in a neaToday article. “People are learning at home that ‘this is not something that we talk about’ and they are learning shame,” Hollihan says. “They come to school, and they are carrying all this weight of the separation and worry of having an incarcerated parent and they feel like they can’t talk about it.” Click the link below to read more. https://lnkd.in/eAJcYxuf

"As a child, my father & I didn't have a relationship because of familial boundaries...around 18, I took more initiative to establish a better bond & relationship with him because as a child, I always felt closer to my dad, & now he's my best friend." In WNYC Fresh Starts, Chantel Jackson, See Us Support Us 2023 Youth Fellow, shared her story about navigating her parent's incarceration and building a better relationship with her dad. This Father's Day, we honor the incredible fathers participating in our FamilyWorks program. Since 1986, FamilyWorks has been a pioneering parenting program for men in state prisons, now active in eight New York prisons. And this April, DOCCS renewed funding for another five years! Happy Father’s Day to all the dads who strive to be better parents for their families! #HappyFather’sDay

Our executive team is growing! We are excited to welcome Wendell Walters as our new Chief Housing Officer and Paul Lieffrig, CPA as our new Chief Financial Officer. Together, their expertise will help us invest in new and improved services for people impacted by incarceration. Here's what you should know: Wendell Walters has been a part of the Osborne team since 2019, first serving as Senior Policy Associate and then Manager of Policy and Advocacy in the Osborne Center for Justice Across Generations (OCJAG). His experience includes stints in government, including NYC and the United States Congress. As our Chief Housing Officer, Wendell will oversee our growing housing portfolio, managing existing projects and finding new ways to expand our impact. Paul Lieffig, CPA, is joining Osborne with 25 years of nonprofit management, accounting, finance, administrative, and public accounting experience. He has extensive experience with Federal, State, and City contracts. Before joining Osborne, he was the Chief Financial Officer at Comunilife, a $179M housing service, behavioral health service, and homeless and shelter services organization. As our Chief Financial Officer, Paul will coordinate our financial portfolio and play a key role in positioning Osborne for new growth.

Today, we broke ground on Marcus Garvey Extension Phase 2! We're excited to kick off the construction of this new project, where we'll be providing supportive housing and programming for older adults re-entering their communities after incarceration. Thank you to our partners Governor Kathy Hochul, L M Development Partners, HCR Commissioner RuthAnn Visnauskas, NYS Homes and Community Renewal, and NYC Housing for your partnership in making this project possible, and thank you Council Member Darlene Mealy for your support. ✨ #NewBeginnings #CommunityBuilding
