Is there a cost benefit to hypothermic machine perfusion (HMP)? A recent pharmacoeconomic study from Brazil by Tedesco Silva Junior et al. sought to evaluate the cost-effectiveness and budgetary impact of incorporating HMP for preserving extended criteria donor (ECD) kidneys. They found that using HMP for ECD kidneys, compared to static cold storage, resulted in more kidneys being transplanted, fewer patients on the waitlist, and fewer deaths. There was a cost increase of 4,453,749 USD over 5 years, however, the budget impact analysis realized a resource savings after year 5 of implementation. Overall, they concluded that the strategic implementation of HMP for ECD kidneys is cost effective and demonstrates a benefit on budget based on the increase in number of transplants, decrease in dialysis, and a decrease in mortality rate. https://lnkd.in/gP6YsAvB

For the past two years, I’ve worked as a Clinical and Technical Advisor for Organ Recovery Systems. My role involves training clients on LifePort Kidney Transporter, which gives me opportunities to travel and meet new people in our industry. Prior to joining ORS, I worked as a Surgical Recovery Coordinator for DonorConnect, an Organ Procurement Organization located in Utah. In this role, I pumped kidneys and was involved with LifePort Liver Transporter as part of the PILOT clinical trial. ORS gives me the flexibility to work hard, spend time with my family, and enjoy my hobbies, like rock climbing. Being on the cutting edge of transplant technology and knowing I help make a difference in the lives of those awaiting organ transplants make this role very rewarding. 💜#WhoisORS
