ICFO’s CALLOUT FOR ATTOSECOND COLLABORATION. As part of Optica's summer series of visits, I dropped by to see Jens Biegert, Head of Research at ICFO’s Dept of Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics in Barcelona. Their X-ray science involves generating attosecond pulses in the soft X-ray spectral range (200 eV and higher) to probe the flow of energy at the absorption edges of materials. The team is also involved in extreme photonics, studying the interaction of intense light fields with matter, quantum dynamics and Ultrafast Laser Science. I was curious to understand to what extent ICFO Institute of Photonic Sciences collaborates with the big names in laser manufacturing (like Thales). As you will hear in the video the list turns out to be extensive. Jens was keen to stress that they are always open to new collaboration, either direct or through #LaserLabEurope. Incidentally, Jens Biegert is also chair of the Optica Meetings Council. Lots is happening. I’m glad I passed by to get an update. If you need an introduction, then drop me a line.

“Photonics for Processing Wide-Bandgap Semiconductors” #OPTICA #OPN Lasers and advanced optics are key enablers for processing the emerging materials that underpin EVs, power electronics, smart grids and the electrification of society. The move toward decarbonization and electrification of much of daily life puts semiconductor development in the spotlight. The quest for power devices with improved electrical performance has particularly raised interest in new materials like silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN), often referred to as wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductors. https://lnkd.in/dUtXrgc3

How can the demand for extensive matrix-vector multiplication operations for machine learning be addressed? https://bit.ly/3zMjxyw An Optica [#OPG_Optica] study proposes and demonstrates a hyperspectral in-memory computing architecture that simultaneously uses space and frequency multiplexing. The carefully designed 3D optoelectronic computing system offers remarkable parallelism, programmability, and scalability, overcoming typical limitations of optical computing. We are happy to announce ficonTEC CEO Torsten Vahrenkamp's participation in the Panel Discussion #2 at Optica's inaugural Global Photonics Economic Forum in Málaga, Spain, at the beginning of October. You can see the full agenda here: https://lnkd.in/dQxtttgB The discussion, taking place from 14:30 on October 1, will pose the question as to whether (integrated) photonics is already a semiconductor technology, and includes additional panelists from GlobalFoundries, ALLOS Semiconductors, Jabil, Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI, and NVIDIA. This should be a lively discusson, and the timing could not be more relevant. #manufacturingmadelight #integratedphotonics #pics
