A Université Laval team demonstrated a new design for the dynamic control of defocus, astigmatism and tilt aberrations with a foveal liquid crystal lens: https://bit.ly/3XUv6O4 The design enables a high level of independent control of aberrations by applying different voltages and phase delays to 4 control electrodes. The device could significantly enhance various optical systems with applications in imaging and vision. MetaOptics - TECHNOLOGY - STRATEGY - CHANGE // The great growling engine of change - TECHNOLOGY - MetaOptics
It’s been a week since the Optica Advanced Manufacturing Alliance meeting in Neuchatel Switzerland – time truly flies when you’re doing business development ;). The event was memorable, with top-notch speakers and a critical, constructive audience. We at PlanOpSim are proud to have actively contributed, with a presentation from our founder, Lieven Penninck. After two days of intense business and technology discussions, it's evident that the advanced manufacturing value chain holds immense potential, despite its complexity for end-users. While the ideal configuration for the Alliance remains uncertain, structuring and streamlining the value chain can significantly help companies within it integrate their offerings more effectively, creating added value for customers and expanding business opportunities. Innovative technologies like Meta Optics will benefit greatly from this integration. The value drivers for innovation are distributed across many companies in the value chain, not just one. A strong ecosystem is essential for driving these powerful advancements. At PlanOpSim, we’re committed to furthering this effort by partnering with more players and incorporating additional PDKs. Check out the first comment on our initial PDK announcement from some time ago! In your opinion, what’s the biggest game changer for any advanced manufacturing value chain? Thank you, Optica and Focuslight Switzerland, for making this possible. #AdvancedManufacturing #Photonics #Optics

Is this on your calendar yet? Join us at the Optica-APC Industry Summit, the premier annual event for leaders in cloud computing technologies, hosted by Synopsys. This two-day program will be hosted our Sunnyvale headquarters features panel presentations, in-person networking opportunities, and company visits and tours. Optica is partnering with APC to bring together companies throughout the supply chain to discuss innovations and the deployment of optics in data center applications and beyond. Attendees can expect insights from users and system integrators about technology trends and industry needs as we transition from face-pluggable transceivers to optics co-packaged with switch electronics. We look forward to connecting with you in person in October at Synopsys, 675 Almanor Avenue, Sunnyvale, CA 94085. https://lnkd.in/gt3YVC2X

A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO INFRARED SENSING IS NOW SCALING NEAR BARCELONA Mapsi Photonics. I’ve just been on a one-day visit to the Barcelona deep-tech cluster to visit new Optica Corporate members and catch up on the triumphs and challenges of building a photonics company in these uncertain times. Just north of Barcelona, is the industrial city of #Sabadell in Catalonia, Spain. By the side of the River Ripoll, Sabadell pioneered the Industrial Revolution in Catalonia with its textile mills. In the mid-19th century, it became the most important wool city in Spain, being nicknamed the "Catalan Manchester". Today, you will find several deep-tech companies have settled here. I am here to meet the two cofounders of Mapsi Photonics, Daniel Segura Garcia and David Cardador Maza. They are changing the rules for MWIR and LWIR filtering, using a novel silicon-based technology to avoid multilayers. For a company founded in June 2021, they have managed to achieve more than most, having persuaded investors (Bullnet Capital) to build a complete manufacturing line for their disruptive macroporus silicon filters. In the interview below, they explain the initial help given to them by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. They are building on research from 2004 at the Micro & Nanotechnology Group of Polytechnic University of Catalonia. Thanks to various grants, lead by Professors Ramon Alcubilla and Angel Rodríguez and researchers such as Trifon Todorov, macroporous silicon was developed in the UPC clean room. Today, these filters are finding several markets, for example, in methane and sulphur hexafluoride gas detection. As a new Optica Corporate member, I ask them how other members of our global network can help them scale faster. I am impressed by how fast they are moving forward!
