The teams of Luminate’s seventh cohort are venturing into uncharted territory and unlocking new possibilities — from the way we screen for diseases and treat chronic wounds, to how we encourage safer driving, to the speed at which we transfer data and move information. Register for Luminate Finals 2024, sponsored by Optica, to watch the startups of the Luminate Accelerator introduce brilliant innovations and compete for up to $2 million in follow-on funding. Join the free event in person or online on 9/26 and see who takes home the grand prize of $1 million; vote for your favorite company to help them take home the Audience Choice Award (plus $10,000); and hear a special panel discussion on AI, Optics, and Ethics. Attend virtually or in person if you're near Rochester, NY. Register soon: https://lnkd.in/gA5AEYdU #optics #startup #technology #innovation

An Optics Express [#OPG_OpEx] study from Massachusetts Institute of Technology presents a technique for developing gradient back-propagation for practical inverse design for a range of previously intractable photonic devices: https://bit.ly/46S8YGC Existing inverse design tools based on finite-difference-time-domain models are poorly suited for optimizing waveguide modes at the heart of many photonic devices. To overcome limitations, this technique utilizes a general-purpose electromagnetic eigenmode solver to demonstrate that the computational cost of gradient back-propagation is independent of the number of parameters required for the optimization of complex geometries. A JOSA B [#OPG_JOSA_B] study highlights the importance of the Jaynes-Cummings model. https://bit.ly/46UnkGB As the building block of resonance physics, the Jaynes-Cummings model is central to describing spin-boson couplings underpinning much of modern quantum optics. The model, which serves as a key conceptual model of quantum optics, demonstrates the non-perturbative time-dependent oscillation of transition probabilities when a single quantized field mode is coupled to a two-level system. #quantum #quantumscience #quantumoptics

Imaging blood vessels in early-stage avian embryos has a variety of practical applications, but optical imaging faces significant challenges like eggshell opacity and light scattering. https://bit.ly/4dTMffs To overcome these limitations, Caltech researchers revisit an approach based on laser speckle contrast imaging, demonstrating a high-quality and non-invasive visualization of blood vessels in few-day-old chicken eggs. The method has potential applications for studies of cardiovascular development and angiogenesis. #biology #biomedicaloptics #scienceandtechnology #imaging
