Dr. Jeff Patton, MD and Dr. Debra Patt, MD PhD MBA recently sat down with OncLive to discuss some of the lesser known elements of the Inflation Reduction Act's second cycle of Medicare Drug Pricing Negotiations. The Community Oncology Alliance has recently raised these issues to Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' draft guidance. Dr. Patton: “Like most government programs, it’s complicated, way too complicated. Anything that’s complicated creates a burden on clinics to implement, so there’s going to be an execution burden on practices." "Implementing the policy and tracking whether the community clinic has received the MFP-based reimbursement now will be necessary with the prospective model," Dr. Patton noted. “The IRA implementation policies are complicated, burdensome, and financially unattractive for community practices." 🎥 Our partner practice, Tennessee Oncology, is featured in a new digital series called Rewriting Cancer that unpacks the misperceptions around cancer and spotlights the efforts to improve diagnosis, treatments, and the lives of patients. 🔦 The spotlight on Tennessee Oncology features how Dr. Sandhya Mudumbi and her patient, Springfield, Tennessee resident, Aimee Northington, use telehealth to keep in touch remotely and enhance Ms. Northington's continuity of care. 💡 Dr. Mudumbi: “When people think about getting treatment for cancer, they are sometimes faced with spending a lot of time in big hospitals, in a city that can unfamiliar, and be far away from where they live. They can also be asked to go to lots of different doctors, to different buildings, and this can all add stress and anxiety at a time they should be able to focus on getting better. At Tennessee Oncology, we believe that if we can bring more treatments and procedures out of big hospitals and into our rural clinics, then that’s a burden we can lighten for our patients.” 🎬 The digital series is presented by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) Cancer Control and produced by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions. 🇺🇸 Tennessee Oncology is only one of eight cancer care providers featured in the series, which was filmed across five continents. 🚨 Breaking: A new groundbreaking study was published by Avalere Health examining Medicare spending and healthcare utilization across physician practice affiliation models in five medical specialties (cardiology, gastroenterology, medical oncology, orthopedics, and urology). 🔍 This first-of-its-kind study reveals that Medicare beneficiaries treated at private-equity affiliated private practices have lower Medicare expenditures, fewer visits to the Emergency Department, and fewer in-patient hospital days than similar patients in hospital-affiliated practices. Specifically, Avalere found: 👩⚕️ Medicare expenditures for beneficiaries in private physician practices affiliated with private equity were, on average, 9.8% lower than for similar patients in hospital-affiliated practices in 2022. 👨⚕️ Beneficiaries in private equity-affiliated practices had, on average, 13.5% fewer days in the hospital and 7.9% fewer visits to the emergency department than similar patients in hospital-affiliated practices. 📉 Across the five medical specialties studied, per-beneficiary Medicare expenditures for beneficiaries whose physicians moved from unaffiliated private practice to a private equity affiliation were on average $963 lower in the 12 months following the transition. 💰 By contrast, per-beneficiary Medicare expenditures for beneficiaries whose physicians moved from unaffiliated private practice to corporate affiliation across the five specialties were on average $1,140 higher in the 12 months following the transition. 🏥 Medicare expenditures for beneficiaries whose physicians moved from unaffiliated private practice to hospital affiliation across the five specialties were even higher -- $1,327 per beneficiary higher on average in the 12 months following the transition. 📌 The big takeaway for policymakers: As Dr. Jeff Patton, MD always says: Independent physicians provide high-quality care at lower costs than physicians affiliated with hospitals or vertically integrated insurers. 🦅 The American Independent Medical Practice Association commissioned the study. Our own Dr. David Eagle serves as vice president of AIMPA. ⤵ Dive deeper into the report. ⤵ And please share it! https://lnkd.in/ewFweH52

🔔 Dr. Davey Daniel discusses real-world evidence and precision medicine with AJMC - The American Journal of Managed Care. ⚖ "In every point in technology, there's a tipping point, a point where we understand this is the new standard of care. I think that we're on the cusp; we've long understood that NGS [next-generation sequencing] testing, particularly with multiple targets now approved across multiple tumor types, that NGS is a standard of care in advanced cancer. 🥁 I think we're at a tipping point in understanding MRD [minimal residual disease] testing and I think that is where real-world evidence may help me understand better over time which patients benefit from that information, but I do think further testing and prospective trials are going to be necessary." 👀 See the entire interview. https://lnkd.in/eSzVkg2f
