In December 2020, the world first became aware of COVID-19 when the novel coronavirus outbreak was reported in Wuhan, China. While the virus wreaked havoc in several countries across various continents in the following months, it found little success in Singapore, a tiny island nation in southeast Asia. In one of our One World, One Health podcasts, Dr. Li Yang Hsu, an infectious diseases physician who is currently the Vice Dean of Global Health at Saw Swee Hock School Of Public Health at the National University of Singapore (NUS) shares what made Singapore so successful in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Listen to this episode as he explains how Singapore got to grips with the pandemic better than other countries. Actionable research to improve health and well-being worldwide
About us
We live in an interconnected world: the health and well-being of the environment, animals, and humans are intertwined in ways that are becoming increasingly apparent. Tackling today’s greatest challenges—whether climate change, pandemics, or drug resistance—requires an approach that recognizes these relationships. The One Health Trust (OHT), which was founded as the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy (CDDEP) in 2010, uses research and stakeholder engagement to improve the health and well-being of our planet and its inhabitants. For more than a decade, OHT researchers have conducted vitally important work on major global health challenges, including Covid-19, antimicrobial resistance, hospital infections, tuberculosis, malaria, pandemic preparedness and response, vaccines, medical oxygen shortages, and noncommunicable diseases. OHT’s mandate includes issues related to climate change, biodiversity protection, and the effect of changing human diets on the planet. At OHT, we believe that answers to the world’s most critical questions lie between disciplines. Accordingly, our researchers employ a range of expertise—from economics, epidemiology, disease modeling, and risk analysis to clinical and veterinary medicine, geographic information systems, and statistics—to conduct actionable, policy-oriented research. OHT has offices in Washington, D.C.and Bangalore, India, with researchers based in North America, Africa, and Asia. Our projects lead to policy recommendations and scientific studies published in leading journals. We are experienced in addressing country-specific and regional issues as well as global challenges. Our research is renowned for innovative approaches to design and analysis, and we communicate our work to diverse stakeholders.

It's a girl! The first OHT calf was born on the small farm at the site of our future One Health headquarters, Nimai Valley, in India. Baby and mama are healthy and we are excited to share more about the place this baby will grow up and thrive. Nimai Valley is shaping into a landmark for regenerative agriculture and other sustainable farming solutions to promote health and well-being worldwide. Learn about the Nimai Valley and how you can contribute to its success here: https://lnkd.in/eWQD4KKp #OneHealth #NimaiValley #AgricultureInIndia #SustainableSolutions #FarmLife

This week's #digest includes a #study by OHT’s Dr. Srikanth Reddy on how #health status impacts #labor outcomes for middle-aged and older adults in India. #Illhealth impacts labor force participation globally, yet #age differences are often overlooked. The study addresses this gap by examining how ill health affects labor outcomes among different age groups in India. Data from over 72,000 individuals aged 45 and above from the Longitudinal #Ageing Study show that ill-health reduces labor participation by 28 percent for middle-aged and 36 percent for elderly individuals. The impact on #wages and hours worked varies by age, with elderly individuals being more affected. The One Health Trust’s Dr. Geetanjali Kapoor attended a stakeholders’ meeting commemorating the partnership between the Global Antimicrobial Resistance Innovation Fund (GAMRIF) and the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP) on July 24 at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. This partnership, part of the India AMR Innovation Hub (IAIH), aims to create innovative solutions to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the environment in India and beyond. Over the next three years, this collaboration will focus on top environmental AMR and One Health issues in India and other low-and-middle-income countries. The partnership will begin with an AMR challenge under the IAIH, inviting innovators and startups to apply for funding and ecosystem support. This support will help scale up technology, increase production, and enhance the impact of their solutions. The program will also offer funding, incubation, scientific infrastructure, business expertise, product development, commercialization support, and field integration to ensure the adoption of effective solutions. #StopSuperbugs #IndiafightsAMR #OneHealth #Innovation #AMR #GlobalHealth #Funding #AMRsolutions #Startups

This week's digest covers a #study by OHT researchers Amit Summan, Arindam Nandi,, and Ramanan Laxminarayan on #nutritional outcomes in #children under five post-COVID. They analyzed data from India’s National Family Health Survey 2019-2021 to assess post-COVID nutritional outcomes among children. The study revealed that under-five children had 1.2 percent higher #underweight rates, 0.10 percent lower #height-for-age Z-scores, and 0.04 percent lower weight-for-height Z-scores than children of the same #age in the pre-#pandemic period. Although a partial recovery was observed in the post-pandemic period between 2020 and 2021, some outcomes, including #weight, did not fully recover, especially among children from #rural and low-income households. Due to crowded farming conditions, a large portion of antibiotics used in raising fish and other marine food (aquaculture), is administered to prevent illness rather than treat infection. These practices contribute to the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance. With fish rapidly expanding as a global nutrition source, improved antimicrobial surveillance and stewardship in the aquaculture industry are important. Tune into our One World, One Health podcast with the One Health Trust's Dr. Thomas Van Boeckel. He explains how the inappropriate use of antibiotics in aquaculture fuels the rise of drug-resistant superbugs worldwide. Listen here: https://ow.ly/fllH50SJWaR The Lancet series on AMR - Sustainable Access to Effective Antibiotics recommends a 30 percent reduction in antibiotic use in animals without compromising animal welfare or food production. Learn more about the “10-20-30 by 2030” targets proposed in the Lancet series on AMR ahead of #UNGA2024 here: https://ow.ly/8JvA50SJWaS #AMR #AntibioticResistance #Aquaculture #GlobalHealth #OneHealth #SustainableFarming #aquaculture #AMR #OneHealth #GlobalHealth

This week’s #digest includes an article co-authored by OHT’s Dr. Ramanan Laxminarayan on the importance of vaccinating food-producing #animals in low- and middle-income countries to prevent the spread of #Zoonotic diseases and #AntimicrobialResistance, fight poverty, and promote #FoodSecurity. Animal #Vaccines can maximize #Economic gains among #Farmers, reduce spillover risk, lower #GreenhouseGas emissions, and minimize antibiotic use and resistance in food-producing animals. Funding for #AnimalVaccine research and development is urgently needed to transform their potential to mitigate the health, economic, and environmental risks of zoonotic diseases. An estimated 7.7 million people die from bacterial infections each year worldwide, with many of these deaths caused by antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The recent Lancet series on AMR, written by experts brought together by OHT’s Ramanan Laxminarayan, highlights ways to prevent infections from happening in the first place to slow the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance with simple measures including sanitation in healthcare settings, childhood vaccines, potable water access, and adequate hygiene and sanitation infrastructure. Learn more about The Lancet authors’ proposed “10-20-30 by 2030” targets for global AMR control, and what should be considered ahead of the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AMR here: https://lnkd.in/dyU7eASR #AMR #GlobalHealth #UNGA #OneHealth #InfectionPrevention #CleanWater #Sanitation #Vaccines #Hygiene #WASH #AntibioticFree #UNGA2024
