Founded in 2008, the Oklahoma City Thunder has developed into an NBA franchise with strong fan, corporate and community support throughout its home state and around the globe. Driven by a philosophy of teamwork and humility, the team stands at the pinnacle of a regional cultural renaissance and seeks to impact the state through its commitment to community outreach and involvement.
On the court, the Thunder makes its home in Paycom Center in downtown Oklahoma City and prides itself on creating an environment that is fan-focused, family-friendly and community-oriented. Constantly striving to improve on-court performance, the team has adopted a philosophy of taking things “one game at a time” and steadily moving forward as one.
Through its annual and ongoing community programs and additional outreach efforts, the Thunder directly impacts individuals and organizations throughout the state every day of the year. In all, the organization – including players, coaches and staff – works with hundreds of community partners every year, benefiting countless individuals. From schools to shelters, from building homes to honoring heroes, the Thunder impact on its community is as diverse as our community itself, with one common thread running through all that the team does: strengthening the state it calls home.

After 16 years of leading the Thunder's vital and successful efforts in the community, our vice president of Community Engagement, Christine Berney, has retired.
Christine began her tenure with the Thunder in 2008, as the team arrived in OKC. She was brought on as director of Community Relations. There was no road map, no plan. The only direction for her was how impactful and extensive our relationship with the community needed to be. Christine immediately took on the challenge and, from there, developed and implemented our community programs and established what has now become longstanding and deep community relationships throughout Oklahoma. She bought and programmed the first book bus, mapped out plans for the first court refurbishment, and quickly put together multiple community initiatives, particularly in the areas of education and physical fitness. Many of these still exist to this day and a generation of Oklahoma children have grown up with access to these incredible programs.
Christine's skill as a leader was never more evident than in the aftermath of the 2013 Moore tornadoes. The relationships she developed with so many community organizations and individuals made her uniquely qualified to manage the Thunder's supportive and authentic response. For 16 years, she has been a true example of how to lead with an understanding of not only our organization's community needs but also with humility, kindness, and great effectiveness. She has been recognized countless times throughout her career as a significant contributor and leader in Oklahoma's non-profit sector. Christine has earned the highest level of respect across the NBA business and basketball operations. In addition, Christine has developed a staff that is recognized as among the best and most dedicated of any in the league. This, too, will be part of her legacy at the Thunder.
Saying goodbye to Christine is tough. We will be forever in her debt for all she has done to elevate our community platform to the greatest of heights. She will always be a member of the Thunder family. We celebrate her with gratitude for her dedication, compassion, and leadership, and we wish her great success in the next phase of her life.
Congratulations Christine and thank you!
