About us
Numerous states have state-level organizations which address and implement animal welfare initiatives. Ohio did not–until Ohio Animal Advocates (OAA) was formed in 2018 to advocate for systemic change in animal welfare and fill this critical void. OAA mission areas are: 1) Statewide Advocacy Network - https://www.ohioanimaladvocates.org/advocacy-network/ 2) Community Compassion including humane education and helping community cats and chained dogs - https://www.ohioanimaladvocates.org/compassion-education-2/ 3) Clearinghouse of OAA-Developed Resources such as a statewide pet food pantry and who to call to report cruelty - https://www.ohioanimaladvocates.org/oaa-developed-resources/ 4) Pet Assistance for seniors, low-income and homeless families - https://www.ohioanimaladvocates.org/pet-assistance/ 5) Pet Protection for animals caught in domestic violence situations - https://www.ohioanimaladvocates.org/pet-protection/ and 6) Wildlife Protection to help Ohioans coexist with wildlife - https://www.ohioanimaladvocates.org/wildlife-protection/ Visit www.ohioanimaladvocates.org to take action on important legislation and sign up for action alerts and volunteer opportunities with OAA!

New action alert! Write to your legislators to revise Ohio State Law to prohibit the sale of cosmetics tested on animals. HB 495 would force cosmetics to use alternate testing without the use of animals. Around 2.5 million animals are used yearly for cosmetic testing, where about half a million pass away. Animal testing is unnecessarily cruel and extremely painful. Tested animals are injected into body parts such as the skin and eyes and forced-fed chemical substances. The FDA has even stated that they encourage alternate testing. Write to your representatives today using the pre-written action alert linked in this post! https://lnkd.in/g6NDR-cH

Today, we are highlighting another rescue story from our OAA Board Members! Ten years ago, Stretch was among a litter of abandoned kittens, each needing a loving home. Despite his striking appearance and friendly demeanor, Stretch remained unadopted due to an injured leg, likely caused by mistreatment. At Friendly Paws Pet Supplies & Grooming in Athens, Stretch found a home. Over time, he transitioned from a hopeful adoption candidate to the cherished shop cat! His role expanded beyond the shop when he assisted in cat testing at the local dog shelter, making dogs more adoptable by demonstrating their compatibility with cats. Stretch's journey from a stray kitten to a beloved companion highlights the transformative power of compassion and dedication to animal welfare. His story inspires us all to continue supporting animals in need and ensuring they, too, find love and security. #adoptdontshop #animalwelfare #cats #rescue #kitten #nonprofit #rescuestories #felinefriends

The OAA recommended book of the month is A Dangerous Life by Sheila Hamanaka! This wonderful graphic novel, published by the Animal Welfare Institute and aimed at middle school-aged readers, is about an American teen’s trip to Africa and her discovery of the terrible price elephants pay because of the global ivory trade. Animal Welfare Institute has also created an accompanying lesson plan and will give one free copy to teachers interested in humane education! Check out their website for more information on bringing humane education resources into the classroom. #animalwelfare #read #bookofthemonth #nonprofit #graphicnovel #animals #ivorytrade #reading

Domestic violence is a daunting cycle of abuse, which can be exasperated when pets are involved. When Lainey* learned the man who had abused her would be released from prison early, she knew right away that her two children and four cats weren’t safe. It would take many months before they could be reunited again, but a RedRover Relief Safe Escape grant kept her kitties safe while Lainey got back on her feet. Read Lainey's full DV Survivor Story and learn more about RedRover's domestic violence resources using this link: https://lnkd.in/dFfPWdSu Thank you RedRover for the life-saving help you provide to families and pets in crisis <3 #animals #domesticviolence #domesticviolenceawareness #nonprofit #petsandfamilies #pets #animalwelfare
