About us

About Zeta Phi Beta Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded January 16, 1920, at Howard University, Washington, D.C. by five coeds who envisioned a sorority which would directly affect positive change, chart a course of action for the 1920s and beyond, raise consciousness of their people, encourage the highest standards of scholastic achievement, and foster a greater sense of unity among its members. These women believed that sorority elitism and socializing overshadowed the real mission for progressive organizations and failed to address fully the societal mores, ills, prejudices, and poverty affecting humanity in general and the black community in particular. Since its inception, Zeta has continued its steady climb into the national spotlight with programs designed to demonstrate concern for the human condition both nationally and internationally. The organization has been innovative in that it has chronicled a number of firsts. It was the first National Pan-Hellenic Council organization to centralize its operations in a national headquarters, first to charter a chapter in Africa, first to form auxiliary groups, and first to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The sorority takes pride in its continued participation in transforming communities through volunteer services from members and its auxiliaries. Zeta Phi Beta has chartered hundreds of chapters worldwide and has a membership of 100,000 . Zeta‘s national and local programs include the endowment of its National Educational Foundation community outreach services and support of multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliaries have given un-totaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change.

  • We did it! Thanks to the unwavering support of our incredible members and amazing community, we have met our goal for the 2024 Grand Boulé Zetas Helping Other People Excel (Z-HOPE™) initiative with Project Period! Period poverty involves a range of challenges related to social, health, and economic injustices that have caused inadequate access to menstrual hygiene tools and education. This issue goes beyond lacking menstrual products; it also includes limited access to proper washing facilities, hygienic waste management solutions, and comprehensive education about menstrual health. Our project aims to combat period poverty in our communities, starting with Indianapolis, Indiana, and expanding nationwide. Project Period Indy will help keep young girls in school, promote healthy menstrual hygiene, provide period prep products and education, and support self-care. Together, we strive to normalize the conversation around periods to eliminate the associated stigma. Because of your generosity, we can now donate 10,000 feminine hygiene boxes to support menstrual health! Your contributions will help keep young girls in school, promote healthy menstrual hygiene, provide period prep products and education, and support self-care. We are grateful for your commitment to ending period poverty and supporting those in need. Thank you for standing with us and making an impactful difference! Support our initiative by donating at https://lnkd.in/e8ay7xwf. Learn more about Project Period at https://lnkd.in/eEE7Wgbz. #ZetaPhiBeta #ZetaProjectPeriodIndy #ProjectPeriodIndy2024 #PeriodPoverty

  • July is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Month, also known as BIPOC Mental Health Month. This day was formally recognized by Congress on June 2, 2008. Bebe Moore Campbell was a well known author, journalist, teacher and mental health advocate. She advocated for her daughter who had her own struggles along with Blacks and underrepresented communities. “While everyone - all colors - everyone is affected by stigma - no one wants to say ‘I’m not in control of my mind.’ No one wants to say, ‘The person I love is not in control of [their] mind.’ But people of color really don’t want to say it because we already feel stigmatized by virtue of skin color or eye shape or accent and we don’t want any more reasons for anyone to say, ‘You’re not good enough.’” -Bebe Moore Campbell As we make advances in mental health, we recognize that culturally-based practices are all valid and valuable choices people can make to live mentally healthy and free from stigma. #zphib1920 #MinorityMentalHealthMonth #MentalHealthAmerica

  • Happy Birthday to Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated’s 24th International President Dr. Mary Breaux Wright! Dr. Wright served from 2012 to 2018 and served two (2) consecutive terms as National First Vice-President before being elected as President. She served as the chief researcher and transcriber during the publication of Zeta's first history book entitled, “Torchbearers of a Legacy,” commissioned the sorority’s National Elder Care and Elder Abuse Initiative which was the signature program of her administration and raised awareness and action regarding the care and welfare of seniors in this country. Also during her tenure the sorority website was fully developed allowing for on-line registration and financial transactions. Dr. Wright implemented the "Seven-Point Plan" with programs on community volunteerism, drug and substance abuse prevention, health and wellness, economic development, governmental affairs, and effective chapter management. The sorority became the only Greek-lettered organization to partner with the National Science Foundation, the NSF, with the Human Genome Project. In 1998, she was responsible for the sorority being awarded Non-Governmental, or NGO, Status by becoming a member of the United Nations. We love you and hope you are enjoying your day! #zphib1920

  • Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, or Emancipation Day, marks the historic moment when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached the last enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865. This momentous occasion symbolizes the end of the darkest chapters in American history and the beginning of a new era of freedom. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated joins the nation in commemorating Juneteenth, a day of profound significance in the history of African Americans. It was the steadfastness of our very own trailblazing sorority member Ms. Opal Lee (affectionately referred to as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth”) to ensure the impact of this day was recognized by all Americans which led to the establishment of the legislation needed which resulted in President Joe Biden’s signature in June 2021 proclaiming Juneteenth a federal holiday. On this day, we celebrate Soror Lee, commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and recognize our ancestors’ tenacity, strength, and triumph. As members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated we are committed to advancing social justice, uplifting marginalized voices, and dismantling systems of oppression. We strive to create a world where every individual can thrive, regardless of race, ethnicity, or background. Let us embrace togetherness and work to increase understanding across varied cultures. We can generate sustainable change and develop a society that embraces the principles of equality, fairness, and freedom through education, conversation, and collective action. #zetaphibeta #zphib #zphib1920 #HappyJuneteeth #WeWalkWithOpal
