Cole is an IT Cybersecurity Specialist within OE's Grid Controls and Communications Division. 🖥️🔐🌐 He has worked at OE for almost a year, with his favorite part being the culture: "It's the most important part of any team and the culture here is fantastic, from leadership all the way down to the worker bees." Cole wanted to work at OE because of the mission and potential for impact. As he puts it, there was "an amazing opportunity to help the Office of Electricity's [Research & Development] team look at future grid-focused technologies through a cyber lens." Did you know Cole's favorite color is Periwinkle or that he's a dog person who loves both basketball AND golf? 🏀⛳️ Neither did we! 🤯

The Department of Energy has funded $6 million in research projects for an inaugural partnership in two DOE offices to better prepare the nation for multiple disruptive power events and enable rapid response in a crisis for U.S. grid operators. DOE’s Office of Science Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) and DOE’s Office of Electricity (OE) will guide the research at five of the nation’s national laboratories in a new partnership. The need for faster computing of the vast amount of data on the grid will be addressed. 📢 Today, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Office of Electricity announced its intent to issue two funding opportunities, one to reduce the costs of High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) power circuit breakers and the other to prevent cascading grid failures. Modernizing the grid through better HVDC circuit breakers and physics- and human behavior-aware analytics as well as risk and uncertainty characterization can allow more power on the grid, help prevent grid failures, and thus reduce the cost of energy while improving the reliability and resilience of the electric infrastructure.
