The 25,000 sft renovation of Universal Music Publishing Group’s new offices exemplifies the creative and contemporary artists it represents through playful lighting. Glowing linears curve along the corridors, providing general downlight and amplifying open workspace areas with glowing uplight. Tucked away in private lounges, the texture of decorative pendants compliments each room’s unique interior design. Opening into the central atrium that is washed with daylight, additional lighting illuminates a live tree with glowing globes hidden within its branches for a subtle sparkle. Overlooking Folsom Lake, this custom home seamlessly marries contemporary elegance with natural elements. Subtle cove lights above the window mullions trace the architectural lines, emphasizing the home’s clean design and casting a warm glow on the wood ceilings. Chandeliers hang like suspended sculptures, paying homage to the Client’s creative background, casting captivating patterns across the room. Facades, water features, and decks come alive with strategically placed lights, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. I am honored to have been featured in designing lighting magazine's "Up Close With" series, which spotlights professionals in the lighting industry. Sincere thanks to Randy Reid for including me and to Shirley Coyle for taking the time to explore the trajectory of my 27-year career in lighting design. Throughout our conversation, we delved into the core values that have guided my professional journey: humility, fearlessness, and respect. These principles have been instrumental in fostering collaborative environments and nurturing effective teamwork, enabling us at Oculus Light Studio to deliver exceptional solutions that illuminate and enhance spaces. Plus, the _real_ reason why I decided to study architecture. <- hint, the answer is in the spelling... haha, jk! Grateful for the opportunity to share my experiences and insights with the broader lighting community. Comments are welcome! https://lnkd.in/gvJiYyK7

I'm excited to share with you a glimpse of our latest Oculus Light Studio project! In this project, we made a conscious decision to incorporate a majority of light fixtures manufactured right here in Southern California. Embracing these locally sourced fixtures not only ensured superior quality and craftsmanship but also significantly reduced our carbon footprint. By choosing to support local manufacturers, we not only contribute to the vitality of our community but also foster a sustainable approach to design and construction. Our partnership with these Southern California companies reflects our dedication to promoting local craftsmanship and environmental stewardship. A heartfelt thank you to Santiago Tolosa and the RIOS team as well as our manufacturing partners who brought this project to life. Together, we are shaping a more aesthetic and sustainable future!

Last week Oculus Principal and Illuminating Engineering Society Los Angeles Vice President Scott Hatton along with Erin Erdman of eSquared Lighting, hosted an event in honor of Patrick Quigley, who recently won the first-ever “Beacon Award” for his lifetime achievement in lighting design at last year’s Lumen West Awards. Patrick eloquently described the genesis and application of his Lighting Choreography method—a unique approach to designing lighting that considers how individuals experience a space, leveraging our innate human phototropic responses. Gaining a glimpse into how he forged his way through a burgeoning industry and solidifying his mark as a sought-after designer, it was evident that Patrick’s work and work ethic as a designer has created a standard of design excellence that has further established architectural lighting design as a possible career path for future generations to follow. Congratulations to Patrick on the award and a big thank you for an inspirational lecture! #lightingdesign #architecturallightingdesign #lightingdesigner #iesla #illuminatingengineeringsociety #lifetimeachievement
