On Wednesday at #ClimateWeekNYC, Ocean Visions hosted a well-attended engaging event with a lively discussion highlighting the launch of our road map of approaches to slow the loss of Arctic sea ice. The event featured an introduction to the road map, which includes knowledge gaps that need to be addressed around research and governance, followed by a panel of experts working on some of the approaches covered in the map, including methane mitigation and removal, ice management, and solar radiation modification, as well as highlights of governance issues that need to be at the forefront. Key takeaways are: - Governance must be prioritized alongside research as we assess the potential for any approach to prevent the loss of Arctic sea ice - There are actions and approaches that can be taken now and will make a real difference to our climate trajectory, such as methane mitigation, while we also research other approaches Thank you to all our panelists and especially to all attendees. “You can count what comes in, you can count what goes out, you just have greater control.” – Ocean Visions Chief Scientist David Koweek, PhD Startup Equatic.tech’s approach to carbon removal has two big things going for it: the production of hydrogen, which can defray the cost of carbon removal, AND a means to measure sequestered carbon much more precisely ➡ https://lnkd.in/eb8puCFv #CarbonRemoval #OceanHealth #ClimateSolutions LEARN MORE: Explore Ocean Visions’ efforts to advance marine carbon dioxide removal: https://lnkd.in/gvh2YR3r

On Monday, we kicked off #ClimateWeekNYC by bringing together over 200 participants to review our collective progress over the past year to advance marine CDR research and testing, and to steer the course ahead. Representatives from the US and Singaporean governments joined panelists from the investment sector and academia to lay out what is needed to move forward. One key takeaway: we must have a great deal more public investment to evaluate and de-risk high-potential mCDR technologies – the private sector cannot do this without enormous engagement from governments. The event also showcased five innovative startups that shared their unique approaches to mCDR, highlighting both challenges and important opportunities in the space. Thanks to all engaged for making this a memorable, engaging, and thoughtful discussion. Monday’s (front page!) The New York Times story highlights the tremendous opportunity of mCDR as a climate solution. “With the dangers of climate change growing and greenhouse gas emissions soaring, scientists and entrepreneurs are increasingly exploring ways to deliberately intervene in climate systems to cool the Earth. Overwhelmingly, scientists say nations must sharply cut the pollution from burning fossil fuels that is driving up global temperatures. But many also believe that some of the excess carbon in the atmosphere must also be pulled out in order to preserve a livable planet” #ClimateSolutions https://lnkd.in/gdsts-Dx

Launchpad Spotlight: CarbonBlue Ocean Visions’ Launchpad program provides expert support to select companies, like CarbonBlue, who are innovating approaches that enhance the power of the ocean’s natural processes to accelerate carbon dioxide removal. Part of Launchpad’s second cohort, CarbonBlue utilizes calcium, one of the most abundant chemical elements on the planet, to mineralize, separate, and remove dissolved CO₂ from water in a closed-loop system and capture it for long-term storage. Ocean Visions Announces Request for Proposals: $1.5M available for mCDR Environmental Impact Assessment Framework We are excited to announce a $1.5 million funding opportunity to develop a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment Framework for Marine CDR! To understand the potential for marine CDR to contribute to global climate goals, responsible research, including field testing, must accelerate and answer critical questions about the impact of mCDR technologies on marine ecosystems and communities that rely on them. To support research and decision making on mCDR operations, we are seeking proposals to develop a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment Framework that can provide a standardized approach to assessing the environmental impacts of mCDR technologies. The award is up to $1.5 million dollars for a period of up to 24 months. If you are interested in applying, please review the full request for proposals document for more details, including the application process, timelines, and eligibility criteria. Pre-proposals are due by 16 October 2024 21:00 GMT. #CDR #marineCDR #oceanCDR https://lnkd.in/gpqJSVc9

Following a twelve-month international engagement effort, today we’re launching a funding call for our programme, Exploring Climate Cooling. Climate change could cause global temperatures to increase by several degrees by the end of the century, precipitating climate tipping points with serious and irreversible consequences. While the only sustainable way to reduce the risk of such tipping events is through decarbonisation, the risk of crossing one or more tipping points in the near future has driven increased interest in approaches to actively reduce global temperatures in the shorter term. But in the absence of robust data, we currently have little understanding of whether such interventions are scientifically sound, effective, or what their full range of impacts might be. By collecting essential missing data, this programme will seek to answer the fundamental scientific questions required to reach more definitive conclusions on whether any potential approaches for cooling the Earth could be feasible, scalable, and safe. 🌍 More details on the programme, our approach to funding, and governance below 🔎 Learn more and apply for funding here: https://lnkd.in/eU_C5ssF 📰 Read our latest Substack on the global discovery process here: https://lnkd.in/enZQ_zBV
