It’s summertime and Team Oakland is back! Since 1993, the Team Oakland program has offered summer traineeships to over 2,600 Oakland youth and young adults. Team members get practical experience by participating in city cleanups, park maintenance, habitat restoration and community outreach. They also benefit from trainings on work skills, life skills and environmental topics. The summer program is a collaboration between Oakland Public Works and the Youth Employment Partnership (YEP). It kicks off this week, so if you spot their bright shirts in the community be sure to say hello and show your support! This week, Oakland Public Works is celebrating the return of the Junior Center of Art & Science to Lakeside Park! For seventy years, the Junior Center has served generations of Oakland youth with arts and science education, and currently provides scholarships to more than half of participating kids to ensure its doors remain open to all. The Center was forced to relocate in 2021 due to fire damage, but is now returning home to a beautifully renovated building overlooking Lake Merritt. To prepare for the reopening, Oakland Public Works’ Parks and Tree Services crews carried out comprehensive maintenance of the surrounding grounds, pruning plants, removing debris, placing a weed barrier, and adding twenty yards of water-conserving mulch to help create a more sustainable and beautiful landscape for the Center. Congratulations to JCAS and thank you to our dedicated Parks and Tree crews for helping bring this Oakland gem back to life!
