Preparing our community to address critical global challenges & to create a more just, equal, & sustainable world.
About us
The NYU School of Professional Studies Center for Global Affairs facilitates change by educating and inspiring our community members to become global citizens who are capable of identifying and implementing solutions to pressing global challenges. We believe that the development of solutions to global problems must be informed by an understanding that the world’s challenges are not merely challenges for and among states, but also challenges for and among non-state actors, urban and rural communities, regional organizations, and traditional diplomatic outlets. Through rigorous graduate and continuing education programs and public events, we prepare global citizens who are at home in all of these environments—and thus, who are effective agents of change.

Energy Security and Climate Goals Are Clashing in the AI Era Some highlights from my Guest Commentary in Barron's. 🔹 AI and Climate Tension: how the global race for AI is impacting emissions goals and what this means for the energy transition. 🔹 BP’s Energy Outlook 2024 highlighted that we’re in the energy addition phase, but need to shift to substitution. Despite record solar and wind deployments, fossil fuel reliance and emissions are rising. https://lnkd.in/gcCHumY5 🔹 Tech Giants' Paradox: Companies like Google and Microsoft face increased emissions despite net-zero pledges, driven by surging AI compute demands. Getting the balance right is imperative - these companies are also in positions to push innovative solutions and technologies - it's a fascinating space to watch. 🔹 Energy Security and Innovation: Balancing energy security with climate goals is crucial. Explore the push for diverse energy strategies and innovations to support a renewable-powered digital economy. This piece is the beginning of a larger article I'm writing with Spiros Liolis that examines the geopolitics of AI-Data Centers and Responsible Energy-Climate Security. Grateful to work with Matt Peterson (Ideas Editor at Barrons) and Stevie Rosignol-Cortez (Journalist and Editor at Barrons) 🔗 Read the full article and share your thoughts! CGA Adjunct Assistant Professor Michael Shank, Ph.D. co-authored a recent article in Fast Company, "4 Ways That Cities Can (And Should) Protect Its Citizens From Extreme Heat" This timely piece explores the growing threat of extreme heat in urban environments and proposes four key strategies for cities to safeguard their citizens. Shank and his co-author outline actionable steps, such as increasing green spaces, utilizing reflective materials, and implementing heat alert systems. Check out the piece below!
“How can we better keep our cities and communities cool, then, amid these new normal temperatures? The big long-term fix, of course, requires us to stop burning fossil fuels since that’s what’s overheating the planet. But there are other short-term pathways that can help today and ultimately save lives.” Elizabeth Babcock from the City and County of Denver and I outline in Fast Company 4 ways cities can keep cool amid rising heat.
