“Beauty may, as they say, only be skin deep. Unfortunately, that is often the case for the beauty industry, where clean-washing and green-washing have become the latest trend to mask an industry that is rife with products that contain dangerously unhealthy ingredients.” Elizabeth Reyes, the Toxic Policy Campaigns Coordinator at our partner institution, WE ACT for Environmental Justice, exposes the harmful realities behind many beauty products in her recent op-ed for Amsterdam News. Reyes highlights how many cosmetics contain chemicals that are detrimental to health and the environment, often hidden behind confusing ingredient lists and misleading marketing. One alarming example she cites is the presence of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAs), known as "forever chemicals," in waterproof mascaras and other beauty products. These chemicals accumulate in our bodies and can lead to severe health issues, including immune system disruption and increased cancer risk. Despite the European Union banning over 1,300 chemicals from cosmetics, the U.S. has only banned 11. This stark contrast raises the question: If safer products are already being manufactured for other markets, why can't they be sold in the U.S.? New York State has an opportunity to address this with the Beauty Justice Act (S.4265/A.6969), which requires ingredient transparency and bans harmful chemicals, particularly those that disproportionately affect women of color. The Exchange aims to confront urgent climate impacts and develop innovative, scalable, and sustainable solutions.
About us
The New York Climate Exchange (“The Exchange”) is a first-of-its-kind collaborative model for accelerating climate change solutions for New York City and beyond. Powered by its strong partnerships and future home on Governors Island, The Exchange will use education, research, an innovation hub, job training, and public programs to prepare communities to respond to climate challenges. The Exchange is based on a simple idea: collaboration works. The Exchange’s partner network includes climate experts, researchers, educators, business leaders, and community organizers who are working together to tackle the effects of climate change. Expected to open in 2028, The Exchange’s home on Governors Island will be a beacon for sustainable and resilient urban environments around the world, using renewable energy and zero-waste technologies to generate more energy than it consumes. The Exchange also aspires to be New York City’s first large-scale mass timber development and first Living Building Challenges certification. Together, The Exchange’s partner network, physical campus, and extensive offerings will explore and develop climate solutions focused on justice and inclusion; the relationship between energy, water, and food systems; and sustainable urban environments. Opportunities to explore and get involved with The Exchange will be available before construction starts.

This past Friday, our interns spent the day at Pace University working with a law panel, taking part in a networking workshop, and student presentation. From Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University's environmental law program, they were joined by Jason Czarnezki, Joseph Siegel, and Barbara Ballan who discussed the landscape of environmental law including environmental law history, anti-greenwashing litigation, and an overview of corporate and environment and social governance law. They we were also joined by Maria Caldwell-Richart from Rochester Institute of Technology who guided the interns through a workshop on networking and developing professional relationships. Finally, our intern Uzair Mahmud offered a presentation on vaccine hesitancy followed by a group discussion on how this relates to climate impacts.

Our partners at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) have released a new report revealing that supply chain emissions are 26 times higher than operational emissions. Alarmingly, only 15% of corporates have set upstream Scope 3 targets. BCG's "Scope 3 Upstream: Big Challenges, Simple Remedies" report also highlights that upstream emissions from the manufacturing, retail, and materials sectors have a footprint 1.4 times the total CO2 emitted in the EU in 2022. Additionally, corporates with a climate-responsible board—those with climate oversight and competence—are five times more likely to have a Scope 3 target and a 1.5°C-aligned transition plan. Companies must urgently and committedly address their supply chain emissions to make meaningful strides in lowering overall emissions. A groundbreaking study by our partner American Geophysical Union reveals that oceans may have been warmer than previously thought. Using advanced ice core analysis, researchers have gained new insights into Earth's energy balance, mainly how ocean heat content (OHC) has changed over time. The study highlights the role of xenon, krypton, and nitrogen trapped in ice core air bubbles, which help reconstruct past OHC. Findings suggest that the ocean was slightly warmer than estimated during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) around 20,000 years ago. This revised understanding is vital for unraveling the history of global #climate and the role of oceans as a significant heat reservoir. At the #NewYorkClimateExchange, we are proud to collaborate with global leaders in climate science who provide invaluable insights into our planet's climate, past, present, and future. As extreme weather events become more frequent, communities worldwide must adapt swiftly. Our partners at the University of Oxford are at the forefront of this effort, pioneering advanced extreme weather forecasting and early warning systems in East Africa. In collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC), this Oxford-led initiative will integrate AI technologies to enhance community safety in the region.
