The outcome of this election underscores the deep challenges we face in uniting around a shared vision for #climateaction. We face this moment in a markedly different place than we were eight years ago. On one hand, climate-related disasters are more severe and frequent, and public expectations for a strong and sustained government response to these crises are growing. On the other hand, profound progress in clean energy markets have led to tipping points that make the transition to a green and blue economy inevitable. Knowledge and awareness of the risks of inaction is also growing, albeit in geographically uneven ways. We're also heartened to see climate plans in place at all levels of government and within corporations. The New York Climate Exchange, alongside our 48 partners, emerges from this election with renewed clarity on the following realities: - Climate change is indifferent to political cycles. Changes in political leadership will not alter the declarations of drought or strength of hurricanes brewing off our shores. - Momentum in climate investment is on a positive upward trend line, but political signals do have an impact on the level of investor commitment. - Science must be supported, elevated and communicated in ways that resonate with Americans, enhancing their understanding of its impact on their lives and the future of those they love. About us
The New York Climate Exchange (“The Exchange”) is a first-of-its-kind collaborative model for accelerating climate change solutions for New York City and beyond. Powered by its strong partnerships and future home on Governors Island, The Exchange will use education, research, an innovation hub, job training, and public programs to prepare communities to respond to climate challenges. The Exchange is based on a simple idea: collaboration works. The Exchange’s partner network includes climate experts, researchers, educators, business leaders, and community organizers who are working together to tackle the effects of climate change. Expected to open in 2028, The Exchange’s home on Governors Island will be a beacon for sustainable and resilient urban environments around the world, using renewable energy and zero-waste technologies to generate more energy than it consumes. The Exchange also aspires to be New York City’s first large-scale mass timber development and first Living Building Challenges certification. Together, The Exchange’s partner network, physical campus, and extensive offerings will explore and develop climate solutions focused on justice and inclusion; the relationship between energy, water, and food systems; and sustainable urban environments. Opportunities to explore and get involved with The Exchange will be available before construction starts.

Ever heard of an island becoming a “living laboratory” for climate solutions? 🏝️ Last week, we took an inspiring trip to Governors Island - a 172-acre former military base just a short, 10-minute ferry ride from Lower Manhattan. This site is set to be one of NYC’s climate hubs, following Mayor ERIC ADAMS’ $700 million initiative to transform the island as a hub for sustainable development, innovation, and as the headquarters for The New York Climate Exchange. Lauren Wang, Director of Climate Programs at Trust for Governors Island, shares more on this agenda: “Our mission at Trust for Governors Island includes working closely with partners to bring climate awareness to life, from hosting public programs during Earth Week and Climate Week to activating historic buildings as educational and office spaces, including for our anchor institution, the New York Climate Exchange. Together, these efforts are vital components of New York City's strategy to address the climate crisis." Through the Circular Economy Challenge, the non-profit organization also offers piloting opportunities for young climate tech companies to test and prototype their products and services here on the island. This visit offered a great chance to explore collaboration between Denmark and this ambitious project, especially for Danish companies interested in piloting climate solutions here. Companies like Danfoss and Energy Machines™ are already contributing to the development of the CUNY campus on the island, using it as a testing ground and an entry point into NYC’s complex procurement system. A big thank you to Director of Climate Programs, Lauren Wang, and Chief of Staff, Sarah Krautheim, from the Trust for Governors Island for showing us around. We’re excited to witness the island’s transformation into one of NYC’s green innovation hubs! #Governorsisland #DenmarkinNY #Circulareconomychallenge Lauren Wang | Sarah Krautheim | Victoria Cerullo | Neil Padukone | Helle Meinertz | Nikolaj Fredsted | Garette Johnson | Lisa Mallner | Maiken Tandgaard Derno | John Nguyen

As Pratt Institute's "Adaptions 2.0" exhibit and Jenny Kendler's #OtherOfPearl installation come to a close, the Trust for Governors Island has launched their 2025 Climate Solutions Challenge! This opportunity offers startups and young companies the space to test innovative and equitable #climatetech solutions across the island’s built, social, and natural environments. This year’s challenge seeks solutions exploring how #circulareconomy products drive down the climate impact of the urban waste stream and extend local resource recovery. Learn more and apply by December 5 at govisland.org/challenge, and hop a ferry out to the island if you haven't seen the art and climate exhibits closing tomorrow! 🐚

#SuperstormSandy made landfall 12 years ago today. The storm was a wake-up call to New Yorkers – exposing the city’s vulnerabilities to climate change and the urgent need for resilience. Today, there are signs of progress thanks to steps taken by the city and state to better prepare for climate extremes and sea-level rise. The #EastSideCoastalResiliency project along the Lower East Side and Staten Island’s #LivingBreakwaters project are just two symbols of our potential to meet the opportunities that climate change presents. They are designed with hard-hit communities and the green and blue economies in mind. Check out this CBS News feature to learn how The Exchange — anchored by Stony Brook University — is uniquely positioned to connect the dots between climate research, literacy, and innovation, to help vulnerable communities transform the lessons of Sandy into a resilient future: https://lnkd.in/eSZHrBJa

There's undeniable momentum behind the development and training of all New Yorkers to thrive in a resilient, clean energy economy. From the Association for a Better New York (ABNY)'s Growing Green Economy panel last week to NYC Employment and Training Coalition (NYCETC)'s #workforce conference (Dec. 3-4), we are eager to break down silos that stand in the way of equitable access to quality jobs in growing industries. https://lnkd.in/dd779se4 #workforcedevelopment #economicgrowth Andrew Kimball Clare Newman Gbenga Dawodu Stephen Hammer Vinny Alvarez
