Metropolitan Expeditionary Learning School (MELS) has long been an exemplar of diversity and intentional integration in our city's schools. We're so proud of MELS & student Ava Pittman, featured in this ABC News piece, for bringing attention to this important issue:

Transforming Schools, Changing Lives
About us
NYC Outward Bound Schools transforms schools and changes lives, with a focus on serving students from historically underserved communities. We partner with public schools to help them deliver demanding and engaging academics, and build positive and supportive school cultures, generating significant achievement gains for thousands of NYC students each year. Our educational approach and strategies are implemented school-wide in our Network Schools which use the EL Education model, emphasize college access and preparation, and leverage our leadership and wilderness programming. We also broaden our impact by bringing our approach and proven best practices to students and teachers beyond our network through our Adventure & Team Building programs and Select Strategies professional learning services. Founded in 1987, NYC Outward Bound Schools was the first independent urban Outward Bound organization in the United States. Over more than 30 years, we have helped to bring out the best in more than 100,000 students, preparing them for success in college, careers, and citizenship.

Last week, The Kurt Hahn Expeditionary Learning School hosted Chancellor of the New York Board of Regents, Lester Young, Jr., Vice Chancellor Judith Chin and Brooklyn Regents Board member Hasoni Pratts. The visit highlighted the school's approach and many student experiences, including Crew, postsecondary planning and rigorous learning through PBATs. In a debrief, Chancellor Young emphasized the strong school culture and range of opportunities students received. Well done, Kurt Hahn!

Selflessness, humility, connection to others & nature, and a sense of peace & calm — these were just a few of the post-course feelings that surfaced for our students. Thank you so much Voyageur Outward Bound School & Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation – SMBC Group!
From The Big Apple to the Land of Sky Blue Waters 🛶 This past August, a group of NYC Outward Bound Schools students from Brooklyn Collaborative Studies took on the great outdoors at Voyageur Outward Bound School. Students dove into an unforgettable Canoeing & Rock Climbing course in the Boundary Waters where they learned about teamwork, resilience, and personal growth as they conquered new challenges and created lifelong memories. Thank you to our partner, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation – SMBC Group and the SMBC Global Foundation, for making this adventure possible for our students! 🎥 Take a look at some of the many incredible moments from their time in Minnesota:

Yesterday, we held our first Crew Pathway convening of the year, welcoming back dozens of schools across the city that are implementing Crew! Bronx International High School is one such school, and they're utilizing the power of Crew to forge supportive relationships with students who are new to the country:

"Research and experience establish that belonging is essential for addressing the most vexing educational challenges, including lagging academic achievement, chronic absenteeism and student mental health." — via The 74 Media: https://ow.ly/Se1L50TlqRm Our vehicle for supporting student belonging in schools is Crew advisory. Each year, we help schools foster safe and engaging Crew spaces where students build connections and trust through consistent routines and norms. Watch the video below!

If you've been part of the NYC Outward Bound Schools community for a few years, chances are you know Carmen Martinez! We caught up with Carmen to hear more about her new role as President of the Poughkeepsie City School District's Board of Education, and how Outward Bound inspired her to keep students at the center of her work:
