  • “It has completely changed my life. I was really, really struggling here, and my mom kept saying: You just need to hang on, if one thing can change, that could change your entire life." –Emiko Powers, Brooklyn resident In a city where finding affordable housing can feel like a daunting task, the NYC housing lottery offers a glimmer of hope. Architectural Digest sat down with lottery winners from Brooklyn to Queens to chat about scoring the City’s hottest commodity: affordable housing. Behind the scenes, champions like HPD’s Aileen Reynolds, Assistant Commissioner of Housing Opportunity, work tirelessly to ensure fairness and equity in the allocation of these sought-after units. “The original housing lottery was essentially an advertisement being placed in a newspaper instructing applicants to send an application in by mail. On the day of the lottery, all of those applications would be thrown in a big black garbage bag and shaken up and, individually, an envelope would be taken out and written down on a log…. We’ve come a long way since then.” Read more about the history of the lottery and the New Yorkers who live in these spectacular homes: bit.ly/3V7lrAH

  • It’s officially the last day of Heat Season! Every year, from October through May, our Enforcement team works tirelessly to enforce “Heat Season” rules to keep New Yorkers safe and warm in their homes. Every staff member in ENS plays an invaluable role during this time, and we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude for their hard work: During the 2023-2024 Heat Season, our Code Enforcement team conducted 107,241 inspections related to heat and hot water across the five boroughs on some of the coldest days of the year and late into the night. From inspecting heating systems to responding to tenant complaints, our HPD inspectors play a vital role in maintaining the quality of life for all residents. Our team followed up with property owners on 13,248 heat and hot water violations that triggered our emergency repair process. From calling owners to advise them about outstanding violations, to conducting follow up inspections and hiring contractors to make repairs or picking up utility accounts, our Emergency Operations and Enhanced Enforcement team plays a vital role in maintaining the quality of life for all residents. Our litigation team initiated 2,541 cases in Housing Court related to heat and hot water, ensuring that property owners understand their responsibilities to supply adequate heat and hot water to tenants throughout the heat season. To our unsung heroes: We appreciate your hard work and dedication. Your efforts don’t go unnoticed, and your contributions are deeply appreciated by your fellow New Yorkers!

  • There’s a reason this residence is called the Atrium! 🤩     Yesterday we were thrilled to join our partners in the grand opening of the Atrium at Sumner, 190 new affordable, sustainable homes for older New Yorkers in the heart of Bedstuy!    This beautiful, light filled residence features onsite social services, health and wellness programs, and a community garden. The Sumner Houses open space next to the new building also received a new landscaping and walking paths for residents.   Our seniors have spent a lifetime building our city. Now it's our turn to ensure they have the support and resources they need to age with dignity and grace. 🌿 Thank you to our partners who made this spectacular vision a reality!      Check out designboom full story on the thoughtfully designed Atrium at Sumner: bit.ly/3Khi4Ce

  • Stay tuned, HPD and NYSERDA are preparing to launch Round 2 of the Future Housing Initiative (FHI) to fund the construction of new, all-electric affordable housing that will achieve Passive House Certification. After awarding $7.5 million to eight projects in Round 1, Round 2 of FHI will provide owners and developers up to $9,000 per dwelling unit and up to $1.5 million per project to meet the FHI standard. FHI will be open to projects in HPD’s New Construction Pipeline. Projects will be competitively selected through an application process and must demonstrate a financing gap to achieve the program’s performance goals.   The program will be open for applications soon. Stay tuned for further information. Applications and additional information will be available here once the program is open: https://on.nyc.gov/3y9mFDI
