  • November is National Family Caregivers Month—a time to honor those who selflessly care for loved ones. In New York, the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program (CDPAP) is a lifeline for people with disabilities and their families, to choose family or friends as trusted caregivers so consumers can live at home and participate in their communities. This program keeps care personal and empowers caregivers to earn an income for their dedication. CDPAP is more than a service—it’s a crucial choice for families seeking control, flexibility, and the comfort of knowing loved ones are cared for by those they trust most. We are committed to protecting this invaluable program and ensuring Independent Living continues to play an essential role in its sustainability! • 🌈 LGBTQIA History Month: A Call for Inclusive Change October is LGBTQIA History Month, a time to celebrate the resilience and achievements of the LGBTQIA community. But it's also a time to acknowledge and address the unique challenges faced by disabled LGBTQ individuals. Did you know that LGBTQ people are more likely to be disabled than their non-LGBTQ peers? This intersection of identities often means facing increased discrimination and bias—at school, in healthcare, and in the workplace. 🚫 The Barriers Are Real: Disabled LGBTQ youth experience higher rates of bullying, which often leads to adverse educational outcomes. In healthcare, they face greater risks of discrimination, leaving many without the care they need. Economic disparities mean disabled LGBTQ people are more likely to earn less, face higher unemployment, and lack access to inclusive workplace benefits. These barriers are a call to action for all educators, healthcare professionals, employers, and service providers to create accessible, welcoming, and affirming spaces for disabled LGBTQ individuals. As advocates in the independent living movement, we are committed to fostering environments that embrace every identity and ensure equal access and opportunity for all. Let’s use this month to not only celebrate but to champion change. Together, we can dismantle barriers and build a more inclusive world. 🌎 Learn More with Wanda Sykes as she takes you through a brief overview: https://lnkd.in/esFt99Vs #LGBTQIAHistoryMonth #DisabilityAdvocacy #Intersectionality #Inclusion #IndependentLiving #EqualityForAll
