In the solid waste industry, consumer attention often gravitates toward the endpoints of disposal such as landfilling, recycling, composting and waste-to-energy. However, the industry primarily focuses on transporting materials from the point of collection to these disposal endpoints. This crucial aspect of resource management predominantly relies on the drivers of refuse collection vehicles, thus forming the backbone of the industry. Despite the pivotal role of fleet management in the waste industry, there has been a notable gap in comprehensive studies examining its broader implications, particularly in terms of the number of trucks on the road and their operational practices. There are more commercial vehicles in the field at any given time, and the driving incidents caused by the general public have grown dramatically. To illustrate, there was a 35% to 60% year-over-year increase in unavoidable near collisions for waste industry fleets, per Lytx, Inc. 2023 data. With "claims-flation" rising each year and plaintiff attorneys becoming more opportunistic, waste organizations must pivot how they analyze and address risk to better protect their drivers and business. During the past year, Mack Trucks and Volvo Construction Equipment have introduced on-highway electric trucks and electric processing equipment to public and private #waste and #recycling companies across North America. While the volumes are still small, they mark the start of a monumental shift in the industry—one that has been achieved through close collaboration among original equipment manufacturers, battery makers, charging partners and end customers to determine the best paths forward. Feedback from these collaborations is distilled into four key factors that waste and recycling customers should consider when deciding whether to electrify their #fleets. Kerri Mead-Bell is a lot of things—president of ANCHOR DISPOSAL, vice president of the North Carolina Independent Waste Haulers Association, champion of the Women in Waste initiative for NWRA, a mom, a daughter and so much more. The common thread in all she does is that Mead-Bell is a leader. She is continuing the leadership theme as the newly nominated president of the NWRA Women’s Council.
