Vision: A world without cycles of unjust poverty where resilience & hope are cultivated in marginalized communities.
About us
We create and connect organizations that cultivate local, independent agricultural businesses in fragile, conflict-impacted communities. We address global food insecurity at the source by working with some of the world’s most marginalized rural communities. These communities are exceptionally vulnerable to poverty, conflict, and climate change. We equip both communities and individuals to build resilience and prosperity through sustainable agricultural businesses.

Two masters' researchers from Georgetown University's Global Development Program explored how the Nuru model supports smallholder farmers in building their resilience against climate shocks. Madison Davis shares his thoughts about what he learned about the Nuru model. More on our blog: https://loom.ly/RW90Drw #PlantingHope #ClimateResilience #NuruModel

As part of Nuru Burkina Faso’s USAID-funded TIFR Project, farmer cooperative leaders have been trained on properly processing soybeans into tofu. This tofu can then be sold locally to support increased income for farmers through their cooperatives. Nabolé, a farmer cooperative president, shares: “The training we received on soybean processing was much appreciated by our cooperative. We were able to follow the whole transformation process, from the grinding of the seeds into paste, to the soy skewers (tofu) themselves. I'm very happy to have attended this training. I think it would be good to include it in our diet as we rarely eat meat for lack of means and soy is a really good alternative, as it tastes like meat and is good for your health.” Read more: https://loom.ly/qK4OICw #NuruBurkinaFaso #PlantingHope #FarmerCooperatives

Burkina Faso, like other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, is disproportionately affected by climate change. Unpredictable weather patterns, erratic rainfall, and droughts increase farmers’ risk of losing both their crops and income. To address these challenges, Nuru Burkina Faso is helping farmers grow drought-tolerant crops like soybeans. Soybeans are not only able to withstand limited rainfall, but they are a nitrogen-fixing crop, which means that they pull nitrogen from the surrounding air and push it into the soil, supporting healthy soil and crops. Earlier this year, as part of the USAID-funded TILIGRE Initiative for Farmer's Resilience (TIFR) Project, Nuru Burkina Faso trained farmer cooperative leaders on properly processing soybeans for tofu. This training is a critical next step in enabling farmers to pursue income-generating activities with soybean harvests. The 89 trained farmers will pass along their skills and knowledge to 1,500 farmer cooperative members. #ClimateResilience #NuruBurkinaFaso

On this #WorldEnvironmentDay, the Nuru Collective commits to a continued focus on those most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. We continue to hold the tension of the critical role that smallholder farmers play in restoring land, mitigating desertification, and cultivating drought resilience despite their meager contributions to GHG emissions in contrast to countries like the US. As rural smallholder farmers are tasked with the inevitable responsibilities that have been burdensomely placed on those living on the frontlines of climate injustice, we see World Environment Day as a call to action for our global community to support climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.
