Grateful to have been in conversation on Friday, Sept. 13th with the talented Brenda L Croft, First Nations artist and scholar from Australia. Her exhibit "Naabámi (thou shall/will see): Barangaroo (army of me)" at the Embassy of Australia, United States of America features large-scale portraits of contemporary women and girls, the descendants of First Nations/Cammeraygal fisherwoman Barangaroo, whose steadfast resistance to cultural and political erasure during the initial contact with British colonizers inspired the country's groundbreaking Apology to Australia's Indigenous Peoples on February 13, 2008. Thank you to both Prof. Croft and the Embassy for hosting our graduate students for a tour the exhibit and a lunch discussion with public and private sector leaders in learning more about how this powerful art and its connection with public policy in both of our nations. Northeastern University's Summer Youth Employment Program, a collaboration between C2C Impact Engine, Northeastern University and the city of Boston, helps high school students get ahead during the summer. Students can either choose to take part in internships across several departments on campus or participate in the university’s Bridge to Calculus program, a seven-week intensive aimed to improve students’ math and science skills. “The program not only pays you in the summer, which is awesome, but it also means young people graduate from high school on time, which means they are more likely to go to college and be employed one to four years after participating in the program,” says the program’s executive director, Professor Alicia Modestino. #KamalaHarris is doing better with Latino voters than Joe Biden was a few months ago, according to new polling from Equis Research. Support from Latino voters could be crucial for Harris; she is a daughter of immigrant parents and the first woman of color to top a major party’s presidential ticket, and her entry into the race has energized several voting blocs. Northeastern University Department of Political Science Professor Costas Panagopoulos says that “sustained in the right states, the increase in support for Harris among Latinos can be decisive in November. The impact of the sizable shift in Latino support should not be easily dismissed. Its effects can be both immediate and enduring.” Read more at https://lnkd.in/diVnuAtw

@Northeastern School of Criminology and Criminal Justice’s Professors Ramiro Martinez and Jacob Stowell say their research has disproved assertions that immigration exposes American communities to increased crime. Rather, the data showed that immigrants–both legal and illegal–were having a positive effect on their communities. “We are still seeing the clear and consistent effect that more immigration means less crime–and especially less homicide–in places where Latinos live and in places where we do have crime,” says Professor Martinez. While data shows that climate change rarely factors into voters’ decisions on Election Day, environmental disasters are having a transformative impact on elections—floods are destroying polling places, wildfires are displacing voters, and long recovery delays erode trust in local and federal government. “Disasters typically increase voter turnout,” says Northeastern University Department of Political Science Professor Daniel Aldrich. “Either people are really pissed or they’re thrilled—the government actually came through for them.” Read more at https://lnkd.in/eA_pB2XG
