What is the role of certifications in our food system? They play a crucial role in measuring and verifying that the food a customer is purchasing is up to a certain standard. In essence they build trust between a product and its customer. What if, the way certifications were enacted, the incentive structures embedded in them, and the value systems they upheld meant that their contribution was being minimized? What if, in some cases this meant that certifications were not actually upholding the values we want to see in our fooding system? As the conversation around certifications, and specifically certifications for regeneratively produced products, heats up we are taking a step back to take a closer look at standards and measurement as a WHOLE and how we can regenerate the way we think about them to reflect what communities VALUE.
