“We have to stop trying to fix women and fix the structure,” Saujani says. “We spend way too much time telling women, ‘Well, if you just got a mentor, if you got a sponsor, if you got rid of your imposter syndrome’ — we just have to acknowledge that that’s not the problem. The problem is that we’ve never built workplaces that work for women. Basic things, like the work day is 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and the school day is 8 a.m.–3 p.m. — we set mothers up to fail.” And it’s not just mothers. To shift the dynamic away from moms being the default caregivers, all parents need flexibility in their schedules to some extent. . . .
