What happens after a habitat restoration project? That's where ecologists like David Bruce come in! David works in our Chesapeake Bay office as principal investigator for fish community monitoring for the Poplar Island Ecosystem Restoration Project. He looks at how fish abundance and diversity of marsh resident and transient species vary between restored salt marshes and natural reference marsh creeks He has spent 12 years with us here at NOAA, and also worked as a fisheries scientist in the private sector, academia, and several state agencies. The next 14 days 9 scientists, 6 ROPOS engineers, and NOAA crew will be at sea together on the NOAA Ship Henry Bigelow looking for and sampling deep-sea corals in the Atlantic Canyons and Gulf of Maine. Follow along as we highlight our work each day. Why do we call ourselves #CROCHET? Not because we are crafty, but because this cruise is part of the Challenger 150 collaboration and we needed a name! Cross Border Coral Habitat Exploration describes our activities, and we found an acronym buried within to make it work. This is the 4th time US and Canadian scientists lead by Martha Nizinski and Anna Metaxas have collaborated on exploring the canyons, channels, gulfs and basins along the northeast continental shelf and shelf break. #CROCHET #NorthernNeighbours #DeepWaterCorals #ColdWaterCorals #NationalMonument #DeepSeaBiodiversity Ocean Frontier Institute Dalhousie University NOAA Fisheries Photo 1: Science crew of CROCHET, minus Dave Packer (we couldn’t find him when it was phototime) Photo 2: Dave Packer, minus CROCHET (turns out he was in the dry lab) Photo 3: Chief Scientist Martha Nizinski (USA NOAA) and Anna Metaxas (Canada, Dalhousie University).
