This morning at the Global Aerospace Summit hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves discussed the U.S. Department of Commerce's strategy to advance U.S. leadership in the global commercial space industry: "What we're trying to do at the Commerce Department is to leverage all of our tools across the Department to think about ways that we can support the innovation that needs to come, the leadership that the American private sector can provide in space." In the afternoon, OSC Director Richard DalBello discussed the role of the Traffic Coordination System for Space (TraCSS) in promoting spaceflight safety, and the program's partnerships with industry, United States Department of Defense, and international partners. Phase 1.0 of TraCSS is on track to start providing safety notifications to initial beta users by the end of this month.

Did you know that 90% of our ocean is considered “deep,” with depths greater than 200 meters (656 feet)? Yet the majority of these waters remain unseen by human eyes. While this remote realm remains largely removed from the everyday human experience, it is nonetheless intertwined with our marine resources and ways of life, with vast cultural significance. On September 10-11, please join us to paint, draw, learn about, and explore the deep ocean with a FREE event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center (76 Kamehameha Ave, Hilo, HI / 808-498-4709). During the event, visitors will have the opportunity to take a drawing or painting class from local artist Patrick Ching, participate in ocean-themed activities like coloring, meet and talk with ocean explorers, and see videos and other highlights from deep-ocean exploration in the monument.
