This week at NMAD, we celebrated #DisabilityPrideMonth with our American Association for the Advancement of Science fellow, Dr. Taylor Livingston! Dr. Livingston led a lecture and discussion on the history and intersections of the polio epidemic, the disability pride movement, and vaccine diplomacy. Check out the highlights of the event! 

Streets abandoned, movie theaters closed, empty playgrounds, and hospitals overrun. It’s not March 2020; it's 1952, and the largest polio outbreak in history has shut down American cities. Poliomyelitis, the virus causing paralysis, instilled more fear in Americans than the looming threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union. With no cure in sight, scientists struggled to contain its spread. Join NMAD on July 17th from 12:15 to 1:15 pm EDT for a discussion on the intersections of polio, disability rights, and diplomacy. Today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day when nearly 160,000 Allied troops landed in Normandy, France, and changed the course of World War II. Among those soldiers was Karl F. Mautner. Learn how this Jewish Austrian became a U.S. soldier, U.S. citizen, and then a U.S. Foreign Service Officer. In 2017, the U.S. government decommissioned the Eero Saarinen-designed Cold War-era Embassy in Oslo, Norway. [IAL WW Post Two] That's a wrap! 🙌 We have concluded our 6th Washington Week on International Women's Day! 💐 The students participated in a discussion with Wilson Korol and Jasmine Stoltzfus from the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) at the State Department, and role-played as diplomats in a migration simulation. At the end of March, the Executive Council on Diplomacy (ECD) celebrated Women’s History Month. We enjoyed an engaging presentation by Dr. Alison Mann, Historian at the National Museum of American Diplomacy. Dr. Mann shared with us the inspiring story of Ambassador Eugenie Anderson, America’s first female ambassador. Thank you for telling Ambassador Anderson’s story and for the engaging discussion. The ECD would also like to thank Chargé d'affaires Soledad Peña Plaza, Embassy of Ecuador in USA, for hosting! 

Last night, NMAD Historian Dr. Alison Mann joined the White House Historical Association & Margaret Brennan for a conversation on women in diplomacy. Dr. Mann joined Ambassador (ret.) Barbara Bodine, Director, Institute for the Study of Diplomacy and Distinguished Professor in the Practice, Georgetown University; and Ambassador Paula J. Dobriansky, former Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs and Vice Chair of the Atlantic Council Scowcroft Center for Strategy & Security. The panel discussed the history of women at the State Department and the obstacles women faced to become leaders in U.S. diplomacy. Thank you to all who came out or tuned in!
