Updates

  • The streets of this new district in the Netherlands will be home to kids, pedestrians and bikes: no cars allowed. World Economic Forum reports on the soon-to-be developed district in Utrecht that prioritizes people and sustainability over cars. Merwede will be almost completely car free. Walls and courtyards will be covered by greenery and rooftops will feature solar panels. As there's only room for parking for 1 out of 3 households, the 12.000 residents will share a fleet of cars that are parked on the outskirts. Nearby public transportation connects them to all parts of the Netherlands. Multiple stakeholders were involved in the design, including BURA urbanism, Gemeente Utrecht and 10 owners. • 🚲 Two wheels, one love! We hosted a workshop on the latest of Dutch cycling culture, attended by representatives from local, regional, and state transit agencies, as well as advocates and professors from the Bay Area. Some key takeaways: ✅ To design for cyclists one needs to consider the mental load of individuals cycling through a city. The easier it is for cyclists to navigate through a city, the more pleasant and popular the experience will become, which is why we need to focus on unburdening and streamlining the experience of urban cyclists. ✅ Cycling paths transcending municipal borders in order to create a seamless regional network are essential to improving existing infrastructure in the Bay Area. The day was concluded with a panel discussion on urban sustainable mobility, bringing together experts, engineers, cycling professionals, advocates, and enthusiasts to discuss the future of cycling in cities like San Francisco! Panel members talked about the emancipatory power of the bicycle and the political courage required to improve cycling infrastructure. 🔎 “While San Francisco and the broader Bay Area are great places to cycle, their infrastructure and transportation policies are not yet where they need to be to help more people shift to safe cycling.” summarized Luke Bornheimer. 🗣 The Netherlands is committed to an international future of smart and green mobility. We would love to continue the conversation. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have suggestions for collaboration focused on further building sustainable transportation.

  • 🍊 🌈 Pride month may be over, but the work of championing LGBTIQ rights around the world continues year round. As a joint European community we participated in the San Francisco Pride parade to champion LGBTIQ rights, love and equality. 🤝 🇪🇺 Nearly 200 individuals from all local European delegations came far from their homelands to celebrate pride together. This truly embodies the essence of community! Continuing this spirit, we welcomed our friends from Switzerland, the UK and Australia into our group. Did you know? The Netherlands was the first country to legalize same-sex marriage in the world, and we take pride in representing that in one of the most vibrant LGBTIQ cities in the world. 👏 Special thanks for everyone who joined: together we celebrate diversity and love!

  • Accelerating Dutch tech across the Atlantic! 🌍 In Amsterdam at TNW conference 2024, the ScaleNL team reconnected with our Dutch partners and startup ecosystem last week.   The global Startup Liaison Officers (SLO) and ScaleNL team meets once a year at the TNW conference. Connecting in person allows for an exchange of best practices from the variety of markets that the SLOs cover, as well as proven methodologies to support startups by ScaleNL. The main objective is to support promising Dutch (deep)tech startup founders that address the challenges of today, turning them into opportunities. 🌱 Between pioneering deep tech innovators and thought leaders, the future of our planet is top of mind when thinking innovation. The team devoted special attention to sustainability and decarbonization because finding more energy efficient and local solutions is essential, especially in the face of increasing computing demands.   👩⚕️ Leveraging data and (Gen)AI for ongoing personalization in healthcare and beauty industry were programmed throughout the panels and conversations at TNW this year. These technologies offer incredible opportunities for innovation that will further improve NL and US customer experiences.   💥 🤝 The SLO network from Berlin, New York, Paris, Singapore and London reconnected with partners and international ecosystem champions Rabobank, Erasmus Enterprise, Ryan Patel and Vivienne Ming. They reunited with old champions, ScaleNL alumni from earlier cohorts, as well as new tech startup founders and young talent. The conference is a great platform for a brighter future for entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic growth. ✍ Important lessons and strategies were shared between the SLOs Jorn Poldermans, Eva Vergles , Marine Bordenave, Gabby van Herpt, Lieke Conijn and Michael D.. The SLO and ScaleNL team also reconnected with colleagues like Floor van den Driesschen from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as Lilian Reinders from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. Are you a founder of a Dutch tech startup and keen on entering the US market? Then check out ScaleNL Accelerator East Coast 2024 program, as they are currently taking applications ⏰ https://lnkd.in/ggUWARyc

  • Buckle up! You're about to enter motion. The Urban Mobility Playbook is an online guide with tips and tricks from successful Dutch entrepreneurs on the American West Coast. "You need to realize how far ahead the Netherlands is and develop strategic ways to bridge that 50-year gap. I think that the United States has shown that it can move quickly and allocate its budgets ambitiously and boldly and create some excellent infrastructure. Co-creation between all parties involved, both public and private, is critical. The pandemic has shown the US is willing to experiment, something the Netherlands is not used to doing as much.” Our Infrastructure and Water Management Attaché Jan T. is here to bridge and liaise between the Dutch Transportation ecosystem and the richness of sustainability initiatives on the West Coast. With: Maaike Doyer Justin Lokitz Maarten van Lieshout Chris Bruntlett Macaria Flores Jeroen Kok Lilly Shoup Christiaan van Nispen Paul Hoekstra Maarten Sierhuis and many more. #Netherlands #movewithus #mobility
