The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School (Harbor School) is a public, maritime high school located on Governors Island in New York City. Harbor School was founded in 2003 by The Urban Assembly, South Street Seaport Museum and Waterkeeper Alliance as part of Mayor Bloomberg’s effort to replace larger, under-performing schools with smaller, theme-based schools. It was located in the former Bushwick High School for seven years. The school became the first permanent tenant on Governors Island in September 2010. As the name implies, Harbor School has a special curriculum based upon New York City’s maritime experience. Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs are offered in Aquaculture, Marine Biology Research, Marine Policy & Environmental Advocacy, Marine Systems Technology, Ocean Engineering, Professional Diving, and Vessel Operations. The goal of these programs is for every Harbor School student to graduate with an acceptance letter at college and a technical credential in a marine field. MISSION To provide a college-preparatory education built upon New York City’s maritime experience that instills in students the ethics of environmental stewardship and the skills associated with careers on the water. EDUCATIONAL PRINCIPLES - The marine world provides an ideal forum for an education based on excellence, discipline, and interdependence. - Hands-on, inquiry-based learning in a natural environment stimulates curiosity, critical thinking, and vision – all of which help to improve student outcomes. - All students have the desire and intellect to reach their highest academic standards when given the right opportunities and clear expectations. CORE VALUES - All students should have access to New York waterways. - College should be a real option for all students. - Partnerships are key to providing relevant, on-water experiences. - The environment should be left better than it’s found. - A school is only as successful as its students.

What a great afternoon. Thank you to Equinor, New York City Economic Development Corporation, Skanska, and NYSERDA for inviting New York Harbor School #oceanengineering #CTE students to witness the groundbreaking for the new offshore wind port at South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. They were able to see first-hand the start of career opportunities in #offshorewind open to them in their own backyard. Several of last year’s graduates, now working with Edison Chouest Offshore, will likely wind up right here at SBMT. Thanks Mayor ERIC ADAMS for shouting out New York Harbor School alongside The City University of New York and State University of New York Maritime College as the pipeline for opportunities in #OSW. ……. New York Harbor School Welding & Fabrication students spent last week on a whirlwind tour of Newport News, VA, exploring amazing real-world educational and career opportunities. 4 seniors, 11 juniors, and 4 chaperones received an in-depth behind the scenes tour of Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII, learning about the range of opportunities open to them and making valuable industry connections. From there we visited The Apprenticeship School, where the students were made to feel extremely welcome while being introduced to pathways from the school directly to employment at the shipyard, and to opportunities for further post-secondary education, like earning a Bachelor’s Degree while employed at NNS. Rather than owing $100k for their education, they can grow that in their bank accounts instead. Expect applications! The next day included a visit to the The Mariners' Museum and Park, where students learned about the USS Monitor and built and tested miniature sailboats in a lesson on buoyancy. From there it was on to an introduction and campus tour of Old Dominion University, who offer an undergraduate degree program in Maritime and Supply Chain Management (among many others). Kudos to our students for enduring two 8 1/2 hour train rides like troupers, and for remaining engaged, focused, and interested in everything they experienced. We cannot thank our partners enough for their willingness to help plan and execute this trip! Rob Gies and his team at Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII for arranging the access we had been told couldn’t happen. Regina McLean, Dr. Latitia McCane, and the team at The Apprentice School for the in-depth introduction and tour. John Oyewale, Elspeth McMahon, and everyone at Old Dominion University, especially Karen Sanzo who went _so_ far above and beyond in helping us plan the visit, and easing the very complex logistics with rides to and from our van rental. Harriet Smith, shannon ricles, Jessie Frayser and everyone at The Mariners' Museum and Park for creating a custom visit to fit into our tight schedule. And a huge thanks to our own Nan Richardson for planning, itineraries, and making all the pieces fit, and the NEW YORK HARBOR SCHOOL PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION for funding, fundraising, and more. A truly worthwhile journey, and we are already planning next year’s visit! It was a great honor to join New York Harbor School CTE teachers Aaron Singh and Davere Hanson, Assistant Principal Diana Halluska, and ten rising stars in the Vessel Operations program in attending the Change of Command Ceremony for U.S. Coast Guard Captain Of The Port of New York, during which CAPT Zeita Merchant, USCG ⚓️ 🛟 handed the reins to CAPT Jonathan Andrechik, USCG. This amazing event happened, appropriately enough, onstage at the Richard Rodgers Theatre New York, on the set of Hamilton the Musical. The Change of Command was immediately followed by the Frocking Ceremony for Captain — now ADMIRAL — Merchant as the first African-American female officer to attain the rank of Rear Admiral in the U.S. Coast Guard. We know the Port is in capable hands with Captain Andrechik, and wish Admiral Merchant all the best in her new role in Washington DC. Bravo Zulu and Harbor Up!

I started to compile photos and text for a post about New York Harbor School‘s participation in the New York City Economic Development Corporation’s Offshore Wind & Maritime Career Awareness Fair at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal on April 18th, then realized that I couldn’t improve on Captain Aaron Singh’s description of the event, so… sharing! Thank you to all our amazing partners (and future partners!) who participated in this very important day, and to the NYCEDC, especially Soumya Gokuli, Gabriel Lefferts, Max Taffet, AICP, who make this event bigger and better every year. Extra special shoutout to Justin Zeringue from Edison Chouest Offshore and Rich Evans from McAllister Towing for their work helping our students plan lucrative and rewarding maritime careers. NYC Ferry again provided door-to-door service for our 157 attendees, and made sure that our ferry was crewed by New York Harbor School graduate maritime professionals. Last but definitely not least, CAPT Zeita Merchant, USCG ⚓️ 🛟 (now ADMIRAL Merchant) and new U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port of New York CAPT Jonathan Andrechik, USCG made our students feel like family.
Congrats to Max Taffet, AICP and the team at the New York City Economic Development Corporation for successfully organizing the Offshore Wind and Maritime Career Awareness Fair! The event was a hit, with hundreds of students from NY and NJ public schools making their way to the passenger ship terminals to learn about emerging maritime job markets and interact with industry professionals. It was great to see so many companies and organizations, including McAllister Towing, U.S. Coast Guard Edison Chouest Offshore, State University of New York Maritime College, UNITED NY SANDY HOOK PILOTS BENEASSOC, Kingsborough Community College, New York City Fire Department Shoutout to CAPT Zeita Merchant, USCG ⚓️ 🛟 Rich Evans, Justin Zeringue for being passionate mariners and spreading the word to NYC youth! 7 years ago today NYC Ferry was introduced to New Yorkers as a transportation alternative for the 5 boroughs. Since its creation, NYC Ferry has continued to grow and make our waterways acessible for all. Bringing hundreds of new maritime jobs to NYC residents, NYC Ferry has also diversified this industry, setting a pioneering example for urban waterways everywhere. Looking back at the pictures from that day, I see many NY Harbor School students that are now licensed captains and crews in the industry - several of whom are at NYC Ferry! Fast forwarding to 2024, our Harbor School seniors and future mariners are halfway through their spring internships at NYC Ferry.
