Last month, employees from our Peñasquito team participated at RIM ZACATECAS 2024. This event provided a platform to network with fellow industry leaders, discuss current challenges, explore new technologies and share opportunities for sustainable growth. Several team members shared valuable insights during panel discussions and contributed to critical conversations about various elements of mining in Mexico: ➡️ Jose Arnoldo Grajeda Manriquez, Sustainability and External Relations Manager, shared his thoughts on the myths and realities of the mining industry, including sustainable development, engagement with rural communities, actions for water conservation and how to reduce our carbon footprint ➡️ Wendy Yáñez, Superintendent of Local Content, highlighted the characteristics and standards that local and national suppliers must meet to collaborate with Newmont ➡️ George Payano, Supply Chain Manager, delved into the sustainable procurement services that Newmont offers for better results and greater security ➡️ Jorge Bourne, Environmental Air Sampling Team Leader, presented the technology leveraged at Peñasquito to monitor air quality in open pit operations ➡️ Ana López Mestre M., Country Manager and Director of Sustainability and External Relations, shared her thoughts on the future of women in mining and noted that "Without mining, there is no future; without women, neither." ➡️ César Tinajero, Superintendent of Safety, highlighted the guidelines implemented at Peñasquito to support the proper functioning of safety controls and the associated benefits for collaborators At the event, RIM recognized two exceptional female Newmont Peñasquito employees – carolina solis rodriguez, Superintendent of Infrastructure and María Guadalupe Trejo, Loading and Haulage Instructor. Congratulations to our Red Chris Fire and Rescue team and Brucejack Mine Rescue team for their success at the Government of British Columbia's 66th Annual Mine Rescue Competition 👏 Our teams demonstrated their expertise and know-how against 15 mine rescue and first aid teams from mines across the province of British Columbia at the historic BRITANNIA MINE MUSEUM. The commitment and hard work of our Mine Rescue teams highlight the critical importance of mine safety. The dedicated crews from both sites exhibited exceptional skill and teamwork, earning top honors in multiple categories, including: Red Chris Fire and Rescue Team 🥇 Best Overall Underground Mine Rescue Team, for the second consecutive year 🏆 Best Performance in Underground Smoke 🏆 Levitt-Safety Fire Trophy 🏆 Barry Abbott Memorial Trophy for best practical bench skills Brucejack Mine Rescue Team  🏆 USWA Mine Mill Trophy for best underground coordinator 🏆 Sullivan Cup for best first aid 🏆 Keith Bracewell Memorial Award for best obstacle and recovery 🏆 Richard Booth Award for best written score 🏆 Best Bench Technician Trophy Safeguarding the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees is our paramount commitment. Just ask Sharon Ignas, Superintendent, Contracts at our Lihir operation, who recently completed her Master of Laws postgraduate degree 👩🎓 Sharon was granted study leave and worked part time off site while in New Zealand for the program, which allowed her to support her family while providing relevant real-world experiences to help inform her studies. “It was exciting being able to apply theoretical corporate law knowledge to what was happening in real time, and I even included it as a case study in one of my papers,” Sharon said. How can mining and sustainability co-exist?  Our Director of Government Relations, Lorna Shaw, discussed this topic and more during the All About Mining two-day workshop, offered through a partnership with the Colorado Mining Association Education Foundation (CMAEF) and the Colorado School of Mines Teacher Enhancement (CSM TE). Designed to inform teachers about the importance of mining, the workshop provided Lorna with the opportunity to speak with 21 teachers from across Colorado.
