Dr. Suzanne Bailey-Straebler, director of clinical care at the Center for Eating Disorders Partial Hospital Program and Specialty Outpatient Clinic at NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine, recently published a paper highlighting the prevalence and impact of socioeconomic disparities on people seeking treatment for eating disorders. Key barriers to access include the lack of trained therapists, food insecurity, and the fact that low-income individuals tend to overlap with historically marginalized groups who are often misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed. Two heroic #NYP security officers, Rubere Raffoul and Eddie Ramirez, were honored today on Good Morning America for going above and beyond to help people in need. Back in February, Ramirez, who works at #NYPWeillCornell, helped save a man who had fallen onto the subway tracks, jumping into action even though he was off duty. Earlier this month, Raffoul helped deliver a baby when a woman went into emergency labor in the front driveway at #NYPAllen. As a special gift, the officers were given tickets to the premiere of Marvel Studios’ #DeadpoolAndWolverine and surprised on the GMA set by stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, who thanked them for their selfless acts. Skull base tumors have been historically challenging to treat because they lay hidden beneath the brain, making them difficult to access. Dr. Theodore H. Schwartz, director of anterior skull base, pituitary, and epilepsy surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine, is a leader in developing an innovative, minimally invasive technique to remove these tumors, known as the lateral transorbital approach (LTOA), which allows surgeons to access the middle cranial fossa through a small incision in the eyelid. In a new #NYPAdvances video, Dr. Schwartz discusses the development of this procedure at Weill Cornell Medicine and how it is transforming patient outcomes. New York Blood Center has issued an urgent call for type O blood donations due to a critical shortage of both type O and type O- blood in New York and across the U.S. Type O blood is the most common blood type, found in nearly 40% of the U.S. population. Type O- blood is the universal blood type that can be given safely to anyone and is often used in emergencies. You can donate blood every eight weeks and one donation can save up to three lives. If you’re eligible to give blood – and particularly if you have type O blood – tap the link to find a center near you: https://nyphosp.co/3WvO0tq Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine

Security officer Rubere Raffoul was starting his shift at #NYPAllen this past Tuesday when someone came into the lobby and said a woman outside was giving birth. Without missing a beat, he ran to the front driveway, where Leonela Valdez was in the backseat of a car, in the middle of active labor. Within a minute, he had helped deliver her healthy 7-pound, 7-ounce baby girl right there on the spot. “I’ve always been a ‘run into the fire’ kind of guy, so if I hear someone needs help, it’s no hesitation,” he said.
