The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, nonprofit academic research institution focused on furthering genomic research that leads to scientific advances and new insights and therapies for patients with neurodegenerative disease, neuropsychiatric disease, and cancer. Leveraging our strengths in whole genome sequencing, genomic analysis, and development of genomic tools, the NYGC serves as a nexus for collaboration in genomic research for the New York community and beyond.

An artificial intelligence-powered method for detecting tumor DNA in blood has shown unprecedented sensitivity in predicting cancer recurrence, according to a new study. The new technology can potentially improve cancer care by detecting cancer recurrence very early and improving the monitoring of tumor response to therapy. In the study, a team led by Dr. Dan Landau of Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital showed that they could train a machine learning model, a type of artificial intelligence platform, to detect circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) based on DNA sequencing data from patient blood tests, with very high sensitivity and accuracy. The team, which included researchers from the New York Genome Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, made successful demonstrations of the technology when tested with data from patients with lung cancer, melanoma, breast cancer, colorectal cancer and precancerous colorectal polyps. https://bit.ly/45pXCJ3

Dr. Onyinye Balogun, MD MS is an Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at Weill Cornell Medicine, specialising in treating gynecologic and breast cancers. She graduated from Harvard College, Yale University School of Medicine and New York University. She is involved with research and advocacy focused on eliminating domestic and global cancer disparities in gynecologic and breast cancers, and capacity building with a focus on improving the delivery of radiation therapy in low and middle-income countries. She conducts clinical trials internationally and serves as the Radiotherapy Chair for the ARETTA and HypoAfrica trials. As a Cancer and Ethnicity Scholar at the New York Genome Center, Dr Balogun oversees the Polyethnic 1000 project, an initiative to study the genome's contribution to cancer disparities, and is a Co-Principal Investigator of the Polyethnic 1000 Endometrial Cancer Project.
