New York Common Pantry is New York City's largest community-based food pantry that focuses on under-served communities throughout NYC. We offer our services through several programs. Our Choice Pantry Program is designed to meet the needs of our families by providing culturally-appropriate and nutritiously-balanced food. This model empowers our Pantry members by encouraging them to select the food they would like to receive. Groceries are distributed as follows: • East Harlem Location (8 E 109th Street, NYC): every Wednesday through Saturday, from 10am - 2:30pm • Bronx Location (1290 Hoe Avenue): every Thursday and Friday, 10am - 2:00pm, and Saturday, 10am - 2:00pm Currently the Hot Meals program at our East Harlem location serves one, to-go meal daily, Monday through Friday, at 2:30 pm. Brown Bag lunches are served on weekends and holidays, from 4:00 – 5:00 pm. Project Dignity’s array of services is designed to meet the most basic needs of our homeless visitors – food, hygiene services and mail service – as well as the larger, more challenging issues they face: stable housing and access to public benefits. Help 365 helps our guests achieve stability and access to entitled benefits, such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Social Security Supplemental Income. It also provides assistance with accessing other appropriate resources to prevent families from being evicted from their homes and by making employment referrals. Nourish, our Senior Nutrition Program, aims to improve the health of low-income individuals who are 60 years old by providing nutritious food choices from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Nourish serves 16,000 eligible seniors/month at 90 sites located in Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and lower Westchester County. Live Healthy! encourages participants to embrace healthy eating, active living, resiliency skills, and social support to improve overall quality of life.

New York Common Pantry has been participating in Columbia University’s Communities Speak research for the past two years. Their teams visit our Pantries to interview our guests regarding their issues surrounding food insecurity. Communities Speak works with community-based organizations all across the city to collect data. The findings will be shared with city leadership and local organizations to assist City officials in targeting resources for communities in need. NYCP partners with individuals, schools, community groups, companies, and faith-based organizations to run special drives each year, such as our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, or annual Larry Morales Toy Drive. We also partner with individuals and organizations to host or coordinate other charitable drives to benefit our community year-round, such as our sandwich making, or toiletries drive. Diet-related chronic diseases are a leading cause of death in the U.S., with diet being a key modifiable risk factor. Low-income households, particularly within the Hispanic/Latinx community, often face challenges in accessing nutritious foods, leading to higher rates of cardiovascular disease. Community-based health interventions are crucial, and their success depends on accurate dietary assessments tailored to cultural and practical needs. The Cornell FIGlab, in collaboration with New York Common Pantry and West Side Campaign Against Hunger, examined the relationship between skin carotenoids, self-reported fruit and vegetable intake, and diet quality among urban food pantry clients, primarily from the Hispanic/Latinx population. They presented their study at this year's American Society for Nutrition Conference #Nutrition 2024! Daniel Kyung H., NYCP's Public Health Data Analyst is the study's co-author. Daniel conducted collection at NYCP's Manhattan location, worked closely with the FIGlab team and ran reports on New York Common Pantry's Farm Share participants to assist in the evaluation that co-author Ruyu Liu, MS, RD, from Cornell University, compiled. We're excited about the upcoming METS Summer Food Drive at Citi Field on July 26 & 27, benefiting New York Common Pantry! Collection points will be set up at the Jackie Robinson Rotunda. Fans must make their donation at the collection points outside of the Jackie Robinson Rotunda before entering Citi Field. Fans who donate at least 10 non-perishable items will receive a voucher redeemable for two tickets to a select Mets regular season home game in 2024. All types of canned and packaged goods are welcome, but no glass containers or perishable food. Please note that expired items will not be accepted. We’re excited to share some highlights from the GusNIP Mini-Convening Conference held at New York Common Pantry’s Hub. As one of the grantees, we gave an overview of Nourish - our Senior Nutrition program and Live Healthy!, our Nutrition and Food Equity Programs to the new grant recipients from GusNIP. We shared more information about Live Healthy!’s Food MD, a prescription program designed to increase access to healthy fresh fruits and vegetables and decrease the risk of developing chronic diseases. We also talked about our collaboration with East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership (EHHOP) which provides patients/participants with nutrition workshops and access to fresh produce. Lastly, we shared an interview with one of our Food MD participants.
