Centering Students. Advancing Equity.
About us
New Teacher Center (NTC) is a national nonprofit organization. Our vision is that every student from preschool through high school, deserves an excellent and equitable education that empowers them to reach their full potential in classrooms, communities, and beyond. Our mission is to disrupt the predictability of educational inequities for systemically underserved students by accelerating educator effectiveness. Founded by teachers in 1998, NTC builds capacity within district partners to drive student learning, educator effectiveness, and leadership development. We do this by providing PreK-12 educators with evidence-based skills and supports needed to create optimal learning environments that accelerate students’ academic and social-emotional success, focusing specifically focusing on the whole-child.

One lesson learned from our federal grants over the years is that we always have to start by digging into the existing context for the work. Our current EIR grant to develop whole-school coaching approaches to transformative social and emotional learning (SEL) was no exception. Uncovering existing staff perceptions about what SEL is and isn’t was illuminating for our partners and an important first step to creating the conditions for successful implementation. We weren’t surprised by these report findings that the top conditions contributing to teacher well-being are relational. Building positive relationships is at the heart of NTC mentoring and coaching. Based on foundational mentoring studies, we promote research-based ways to build professional relationships in which mentors and coaches collaborate with teachers as partners to solve problems of practice. The result? Enhanced teacher well-being. Read the report: https://ow.ly/HvJ250TUA3x

We’re excited to see growing attention on the power of mentorship as a catalyst for teacher leadership. Quality mentoring can address challenges in teacher retention and school culture, and we see expanded roles for mentorship in new school staffing models. 📰 In a Chicago Tribune Op-Ed, Teach Plus Senior Policy Fellow Ashely Kannan shares how a “shoulder tap” recognizing his leadership potential changed his career. He calls for more opportunities for teacher leadership beyond traditional roles. Read here:https://ow.ly/ZOFc50TQ60g 🏔️ Dean Kimberly Griffin of University of Maryland College of Education urges leaders to foster a school-wide culture of mentorship, supporting both personal and professional growth. Learn how: https://ow.ly/a09S50TQ60f 💡 We’re also excited about mentorship’s role in strategic staffing models. The National Council on Teacher Quality highlights how experienced teachers can mentor and coach novices in reimagined teaching roles.
