A recent AdExchanger article from Allison Schiff highlighting yet another example of revenue opportunity taking precedence over all else got me thinking, what are the privacy implications of the shady advertising practices that continue to be uncovered? A quick dive into this using one of the subdomains highlighted in the article uncovered some interesting details related to data minimization and privacy protection, the biggest one being that this site asks for photo identification AND proof of address (utility bill, bank statement, driver’s license, or tax document) for identity verification!! 😲 🤯 This is not reasonable and honestly kind of creepy. Privacy regulations and user data protection must be taken into account when developing privacy practices just as revenue goals and brand values must both be considered when making advertising monetization decisions.
