In this study, elderly individuals were divided into low, medium and high intensity interval training (HIIT) groups for six months, and had their hippocampal-dependent cognition tested. Only the HIIT group saw improved cognition and reduced brain volume loss. This was maintained over five years follow up. As the authors concluded, "HIIT significantly improves and prolongs the hippocampal-dependent cognitive health of aged individuals." A new NIA-funded study found that maintaining a healthy lifestyle could help preserve cognitive function in older adults, even for those with signs of dementia in their brain. Researchers analyzed data from 586 participants from the Rush Memory and Aging Project to explore the relationship between lifestyle scores and cognitive function. At that meeting last month, an independent advisory committee voted unanimously that the drug’s benefits outweigh its risks, which include fatal cases of brain bleeding and swelling that occurred in about 1 in 300 patients... Lilly said that a 12-month course of the drug costs $32,000, but that the price will vary per individual, since it is administered as a monthly infusion until it clears the majority of amyloid plaques in a patient’s brain. They found that patients who used GLP-1 agonists had a 30% lower risk of developing dementia compared to those who used sulfonylureas, and a 23% lower risk compared to those who used DPP-4 inhibitors. “This is important because it can help doctors make better decisions about which medicines to use for older patients with type 2 diabetes,” says Bowen Tang, a Ph.D. student in Sara Hägg’s research group at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Karolinska Institutet. https://lnkd.in/grM-u4Qp
