NEPI provides a CBT-based hardcore youth rehabilitation model with a cash transfer to reduce youth crime and violence. It is evidence-based and cost-effective. At NEPI, we focus on the reduction of youth crime and violence to create safe communities for everyone. STYL is an evidence-based crime and violence reduction program for the highest risk youth. The program targets the hardest to reach, most vulnerable, and poor youth ages 15 -35. Beneficiaries are selected based on the following characteristics: persistently poor, homeless, underemployed, lacking self-discipline, hostile, idle, and involved in organized and petty crime, or drug use, and are thought to be a danger to society and themselves. STYL is based upon the theory of change that hardcore street youth, many of whom have been members of armed groups, know what constitutes acceptable behaviors in Liberian society but because they view themselves as outside of mainstream society, do not feel accountable to those norms and values. STYL tried to help the men acquire a mainstream self-image, values, and behaviors. RCT conducted shows that STYL reduces crime and violence, drug use, carrying a weapon, fighting with each other and police, arrest, and even things as simple as losing your temper dropped by 20 to 50%.
