Updates

  • NENA is concerned by reports that 9-1-1 calls could not go through amid today's outages. We are actively monitoring the situation. Any time a 9-1-1 call can't be answered or processed, those needing emergency assistance should check the websites and social media channels of their local governments and public safety agencies for alternative contact methods. Local media may also provide valuable real-time updates and emergency information. Also, when outages occur, it is important for all responsible parties to conduct a thorough investigation so that we can learn what needs to be changed to prevent similar outages and associated impacts on 9-1-1 in the future. Meanwhile, we already know that Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) offers significant improvements in resiliency and reliability. This standards-based and interoperable framework allows for seamless transfer of 9-1-1 traffic to alternate 9-1-1 centers during major disruptions. NENA is committed to working with government, public safety partners, and industry leaders to improving 9-1-1 systems and their resiliency, ensuring they meet emergency response demands and provide the level of service that the public expects.

  • NENA congratulates the FCC on adopting a new framework to advance Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) across the U.S.! This landmark order establishes fair rules to fully implement NG9-1-1 services, enhancing emergency response capabilities. We're pleased that the FCC's order recognizes NENA standards, including the NENA i3 Standard, as crucial for NG9-1-1 core services. This framework not only provides a balanced approach for 9-1-1 authorities and OSPs but also improves services for all, especially inclusive services like those for deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals. Now, we urge Congress to commit to fully funding the $15 billion NG9-1-1 transition, essential for maintaining current operations while upgrading to NG9-1-1. • Thanks to WKMG News 6 for coming to #NENA2024 to speak with local and national leaders about important issues in 9-1-1 technology. Speaking from the show floor, NENA Past President Charlie Cullen, ENP, emphasized the need for federal lawmakers to pass a $13.2 billion proposal to fund Next Generation 9-1-1 (#NG911). "People should expect to get the same level of service from 9-1-1 wherever they are in the country," he said. "There's been bills over the past three years to provide that funding. We're hoping that this year will get across the finish line." Jody Kenyon, President of the Florida 911 Coordinator's Association, added that the Florida State Legislature recently awarded significant funding to implement new 9-1-1 technology across the state and hopes that in 3-5 years every Florida county will have access to updated services.

  • Melanie Jones, ENP, is the new president of NENA: The 9-1-1 Association.
