Creating a healthier future for all children #WellBeyondMedicine

About us

Nemours is committed to improving the health of children. As a non-profit children’s health organization, we consider the health of every child to be a sacred trust. Through family-centered care in our children’s hospitals and clinics in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida, as well as world-changing research, education and advocacy, Nemours fulfills the promise of a healthier tomorrow for all children — even those who may never enter our doors. Nemours began more than 80 years ago with the vision of Alfred I. duPont to improve the lives of children and to do whatever it takes to prevent and treat even the most disabling childhood conditions. Today, through our children’s hospitals and health system, we directly care for 250,000 children annually in Delaware Valley and Florida, including families who travel from across the country and world to see our specialists — treating every child as we would our own. We also reach beyond the walls of our hospitals and clinics to be a voice for children on a national and international level, and to lead the way in prevention, intervention, education, and research. Nemours is growing to better serve the children and families in our care. We have 1.1 million square feet of space currently devoted to providing children’s healthcare or under construction, all designed with significant input and advice from our patients and families.

We were proud to host the 5th Annual Cindy Pellegrini Maternal and Child Health Advocacy Day, along with March of Dimes and the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. An inspiring group of nurses, neonatologists, and residents from the Delaware Valley and Florida joined our National Office’s Federal Affairs team in meetings with our congressional delegation to advocate for legislation to improve maternal and infant health. More than 70 advocates across these organizations urged the Senate to pass the PREEMIE Act and Preventing Maternal Deaths Act before the end of the year, and for Congress to take meaningful steps to improve access to maternal mental health services. #CindysAdvocacyDay #PREEMIEAct #MaternalMortality

While many hospitals and healthcare systems have launched physician residency programs this year, Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida celebrates the fifth anniversary of our pediatric residency program. From welcoming our sixth cohort of resident physicians in July to maintaining a remarkable 100% match rate throughout the program’s lifespan, we are committed to combating pediatrician shortages in the State of Florida. Moreover, our Central Florida training program is rapidly becoming one of the largest pediatric residency and fellowship programs in the State; 60 Nemours Children’s trainees and 200 trainees from over 25 programs walk through our doors to be educated by our physicians.    I want to extend my gratitude to Dr. Heather Fagan for her leadership of our Graduate Medical Education efforts, ensuring that physicians are well-trained and equipped to meet the patient care needs of the future. Our residency program is part of our commitment to ensuring that Florida's 4.2 million children can receive the very best care possible now and into the future. As someone who grew up in Seminole County, yesterday was special for me. It was an honor to welcome members of the Seminole County Legislative Delegation yesterday to Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida. Thank you Senator Jason Brodeur, MPH, MBA, Rep. Susan Plasencia, Rep. Douglas Bankson, and the staff for Rep. David Smith. Between our 4 Primary/Specialty Care locations, 14k patient encounters, and nearly 300 associates, we are grateful to be in your district. More than 10% of American babies are born premature. It is the second most common cause of infant death. As I wrote in an opinion piece co-authored with March of Dimes in CQ and Roll Call last year, Congress authorized the PREEMIE Act in 2006 to fund research and public-private partnerships to reduce preterm birth. It is critical that legislators act now to reauthorize it. The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the bill, and we are now calling on the Senate to do the same. Nemours Children’s Health is literally showing up for this cause. Tomorrow is the fifth annual Cindy Pellegrini Maternal and Child Health Advocacy Day. Along with our colleagues from the March of Dimes and the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, clinicians and advocates from Nemours will be advocating before Congress to push for the passage of the PREEMIE Act, among other key legislative priorities for maternal and child health. #CindysAdvocacyDay #PREEMIEAct #MaternalMortality

Early childcare education (ECE) providers play an important role in setting a strong foundation for children’s health. And it’s more than just learning ABCs — whole child health is interdependent on nutrition, physical activity, and healthy development. In our latest episode of the Well Beyond Medicine podcast, we explore the transformative Healthy Kids Healthy Future Technical Assistance Program designed to support ECE providers with the training and resources they need to ensure good health from the start. We hear from our very own Georgia S. Thompson alongside Diane Frentzel of the Rodel Foundation of Delaware and Rhondalin Cannon-Tingle, an early care and education provider. They share how partnerships between Nemours Children's Health and Rodel are making a lasting impact on ECE and health in Delaware. At 12 years old, during Kelly’s routine physical, doctors expressed concern after noting a curvature of the spine. She was referred to Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware, where she was diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis with a spinal curve of 72 degrees. Middle school was challenging, as she balanced physical therapy and multiple visits to Nemours to explore therapeutic options. After months of unsuccessful physical therapy, her doctors determined surgery would provide the best prognosis. Kelly was admitted to Nemours Children’s for one month. She was placed in traction for the week prior to surgery to correct the curvature as much as possible. This was followed by placement of a post-surgical body cast and 3 more weeks of inpatient recovery. She remained in the full body cast with head and neck support for 6 months followed by a new body cast without neck support for an additional 4 months. During this time, she was home schooled for 9th grade due to her inability to attend school. "Inspired by the compassionate care at Nemours, I chose a career in nursing. Eventually, I underwent a Spinal Fusion from T1 to T12 performed by Dr. Dean MacEwen, Medical Director. Looking back, my advice to fellow travelers is simple: Treatment has advanced since 1972 as Nemours treatment options evolved through using and evidence-based practice approach. It is the best place to receive orthopedic care! 😊" #NemoursChildrens #Scoliosis #AssociateHighlight
